Yay for races and breaking things.

Welp, last weekend was the weekend our local race club gets to run around on Road America, in Elkhart Lake Wisconsin. Which is a really neat track; been going there with my dad for a decade or so.

So Saturday and Sunday each had a race. We race an '83 in Improved Touring, but we're prepared to just about the limits of the rules. Some minor problems Saturday included fun things like an electrical fire under the dash and the exhaust coming unbolted from the header; neither of which kept my dad from finishing the race. We've got strapping going under the car to hold the pipe up in a couple places, and that kept it from dragging. Evidently it was quite a bit louder though...

Sunday though... well, I got there early and redid the wiring, adding another fuse to things. We fixed the exhaust and everything was looking good but... well, there was evidently some engine problems. Car smoking, substantially down on power... yeah. That, the oil over the engine bay, the 30psi compression and the really fouled plugs sort of led us to suspect an oil seal going on the front rotor.

So fooey. That engine only had 3 or 4 races on it. But oh well, guess I have a project to work on in the couple weeks before the next race.

Just thought I'd share.

ouch.

Eh well, gotta have something to do in your spare time

I'm curious, what caused the dash electrical fire?
I had some smoke coming out of mine the other day and it really freaked me out... :-/

Well, the fire in the dash started when the started button came loose and the hot side arced against... something. We've tossed the entire stock harness and replaced the few wires that're necessecary but... well, didn't forsee that. Redid the wires that got burned, put the starter button on a fuse, and electrical taped the button so that even if it did come out again it couldn't zap anything.

At least we didn't bump a wall like two of the other rexes. Or the Integra Type-R running in showroom stock.
