how can i safely remove the air pump?

how can i safely remove the air pump?

im wondering if by just disconnecting it i can get by with no car problems?WILL I GAIN ANYTHING?SMOG IS A MUST IN MY AREA BUT ITS NO SWEAT IF U KNOW WHAT I MEAN.

also..

if i GO ahead and just remove it what do i need to do or convert..

my car is a 1981 with a 1983 12a.my tranny is from a 84 or 85 gsl.

SOME STUFF I HAVE:

ACCEL PLUG WIRING.
REMOVE AC COMPLETELY
NEW POLYURETHANE BUSHINGS ALL AROUND.
DYNOMAX EXHAUST.
NEW REBUILT NIKKI CARB
CARB IDLES AT ABOUT 800-900 RPM.IS THIS TOO HIGH??
DIFFERENT SIZE TIRES ,, WIDE IN THE REAR.
NEW NGK PLUGS.
FREQUENT OIL CHANGES WITH MOBIL.
NEW FRONT CARTRIDGES.
NEW REAR STRUTS.
NEW INTERIOR//SEATS AND DOOR PANELS.
12OO WATT STEREO SET UP

i don't see there being a point unless you are running a header, but i am not for sure. that is when i removed mine

Yeah, typically you get far better results when you pull the stock exhaust mani and get a header. My signature (click for link) has the info you're looking for.

As for being a point. The over-engineering involved in the emissions system can lead to overcomplication when troubleshooting, and introduce more problems than necessary.

Many times a rough idling car will purr once the rats nest is gone. I know because I've been there

I followed pratch's how-to and it works! Though I did not keep the solenoid he mentions since I removed the A/C also (long dead) and are only a couple of discrepancies in it but nothing that was a show stopper that I couldn't figure out myself.

The idle is smoother, no backfires, and seems to have more acceleration now too.

Yeah, now that I have an 82 to work on, I may update the tutorial to show the differences between the 81-83 and the 84-85. No promises, but as long as I'm gutting the 82's nest it shouldn't be a problem.
