WTS!?! (what the s**t)

ok big problem for me....today i swapped my coils from the 83GS to the 82S. started the car and it ran fine. i let it warm up and took it for a drive and it drove fin. so i parked it and went inside to get ready for work. the car got me to work fine as well....when i left work it started fine and warmed up properly but about half way home the car started acting really wierd on me. i slowed to cross some railroad tracks and when i put it in second and started to accellerate away i decided to take the tach to 5.5k rpm. well when i shifted in to third and started driving i noticed that it was running a little rough, so i put in the clutch and let it idle on its own and it was idling at about 2.5k rpms instead of the normal 800 rpm and it was really rough and raspy sounding. i pulle dover and popped the hood and smoke was rising from around the oil filter/clutch slave area of the engine bay. it wasn/t thick smoke and it was dark gray. couldn't place the smell but it was almost like oil mixed with electrical.

any thoughts on what might have happenned? im totally bummed and i kinda need a little help

When I lost my leading ignition once upon a time, it resulted in high engine temps (not coolant, but engine). You could see all of the old oil, WD-40, etc. smoking as it was burning off the engine. That's the first thing that I would check...

did it make your idle increase and get rough when it went?

Idle did not increase in my case, but I have heard of that happening with the loss of leading ignition. It definitely got rough, and the car had a lack of power...

I was under the impression that a rotary could not run on only trailiing ignition or if it did it would be very rough and barely idle. Makes sence why though. The trailing is 20degrees retarded from the leading, and when I had the dizzy out a tooth on my car it retarded the leading by about 15 to 20 degrees and the car was VERY rough and would not rev easily. The slightest bit of throttle input would just about stall the car.

ok i swapped the coils this morning and the car was very hard to start. when i finally got it running it still idles high at about 1.5k - 2k rpms. the idle smoothed out but it backfires at about 4k rpms whenever i shift and it backfires when i turn the car off. it still smells like burning oil/electrical and i saw a little smoke but nowhere near as bad as last night. the smoke seems to be coming from around the emissions sylenoids. any ideas as to what may be going on?

there was no loss of power last night or today either....im really stumped as to what happenned....

Instead of just swapping parts around, you should be verifying what you have at the moment. Instead of changing the coils, I would have checked for spark first. Otherwise, you're just chasing your own tail...
