WTF holy crap this is whack!

Ok today im at work and im on my 15 min break. I decide to put my gas pedal cover back on. Anyways im putting it on andmy friend drops by. He works at a carwash on got off early. Since he gets a discount i let him take my car there. He comes back and he got a huge discount, car looks sweet, and he got some chamois's from there for free. Im laughin and i lock and shut the door. He says "Uh you know your keys are in there?" I almost died. we try coathangers etc. But then for fun he sticks his key for his 83 Chevy Tahoe( a small pickup) and the key OPENS THE DOOR!!! WTF?

Nobody ever said these cars were secure Ive also heard of a trick where with a pencil you can stick it through a spot in the door handle and it will pop the door lock right up.

There were a string of posts about stuff like this a month or two ago.

I think RX-7s were one of the most commonly stolen cars because of their ease to steal and popularity when they were in their prime. I think I heard that too

does it work on both doors? I've seen locks where anything flat can open them, usualy from being broken into.

I'd like to learn the pencil trick... The cylinder on my driver's side door is shot, so the key doesn't turn at all. (Nearly broke two off trying... And since nobody can make good copies, one of those is the only one that works in the ignition.) I really hate having to climb in through the hatch or the passenger side to unlock the door.

Alternatively, A slim jim is a very simple device. We had one at the shop I worked at and people'd lock their keys in when they dropped their cars off. (Dumbasses.) It's just a piece of sheet metal, about an inch wide and a foot long, with notches cut near the end to the tip looks like a "T".

BMW's have a metal plate attached over the lock mechanism, so the standard slim jim described above won't hook onto anything.

I keep one in my wallet, because when I'm driving, what else is required aside from car keys?

I learned the hard way. I was driving (The Honda) and noticed the temp gauge getting just a little high. It was sometime in the middle of the night, but I was near my mom's house. She wouldn't be as weirded out by me using the hose as some stranger if she happened to wake up and find me. Anywho. I park the car, leaving it running, and get out, closing the door, reflex action locking it. I turn around. OH ****! I spent 45 minutes with half a coat hanger I found in the driveway, because I didnt wanna wake anyone up... (Part of that time was trying to kill the engine by blocking the tail pipe. I didn't need to go walking with a gas can in addition to getting water. I almost succeeded, but I couldnt get a good enough seal on the tail pipe, even with my sock. Then I tried to pry the hood open with a screwdriver so I could just pull the ignition coil wire.) I finally gave up and woke my mom up to see if she had spare keys... Nope. Another half an hour and we got it open with a proper hanger. Honda's have the, bare none, shittiest locks in the world, but when your tired and can't see... I still look back on that and laugh... But only I'm allowed to laugh at me.

Try the ignition!

At my college, one of my teachers had an 84 RX-7 too. One day I got an idea, so I tried the key for my 84GSL on his and it unlocked the door AND STARTED THE CAR!!!! So for the next 3 days I moved his car a few parking spots over during my break in the middle of the day, to mess with his head. Him and I are friends so he laughed his *** off when I told him on the friday, he was just glad he wasn't nuts!

I could understand Keys for the same year and model fitting and working. How many 1984 RX-7's are out there? So, can they cut keys that radically different?

The part that weirds me out above is a GM key fitting a Mazda car.

my drivers side door would open with any key but not the passenger side. Unstead of taking it to a lock repaire place I just took the piece from my parts car and now have a diff key for each door. I could always get the lock from my parts car converted to my key (I have done this with another car) but I don't care.

I was referring to the Tahoe key in the first post fitting a Mazda.
