To set the timing, just get yourself a timing light. Then, hook it up tothe battery as usual, but then hook the induction lead (or whatever its called) to the spark plug wire going from the dizzy to the leading 1 plug (lower left plug). Point it at the main crank while its running and check to see that the dash on the pully lines up with the pin. Then, to check the trailing, just put the induction lead on the trailing 1 wire form the dizzy to the trailing 1 plug (upper left plug). Once again, point the light at the pully and make sure the dash lines up with the pin. If one or the other (or both) dont lines up, its time to do some adjusting. To adjust the leading, loosen the 10mm bolt at the base of the dizzy and rotate the dizzy (slowly!) with the engine running and the timing gun pointing at the pully until the dash lines up with the pin. To adjust the trailing, loosen those two phillips screws on the vaccum advance chamber, then (slowly!) slide it in or out with the engine running and the light pointing at the main pully until the dash lines up with the pin. Dont forget to retighten everything.

Thats basically the way the manual tells you to do it. By the way, when you adjust the leading, I would reccomend that you grab the dizzy around the side of it as if you were drinking a soda, and NOT the top of it. OUCH!! Haha, that sucks . I learned quick though .

The other thing I would check is that all the plugs are at least getting spark from the dizzy. To do this, just hook the timing light up to each of the 4 spark plug wires and pull the trigger. If it blinks, youre getting spark, if not, youve got problems .

I also had a problem similar to this when I had a clogged fuel filter. At first it would stumble and lose power only high in the RPMs, then it progressivly got lower and lower in the RPMs when it would loose power, until it just didnt have any power to get out of its own way. I replaced the filter and all was better .

Might as well try and check compression if you can as well . You could replace the plugs too, maybe one isint firing well?

PS - The timing should be checked at ~750 RPMs according to the manual, so check the mixture and idle first .

Unless someone has added any, theres only the main rear one.

Sounds a lot like a fuel filter, and or just plain old fuel starvation.

I also just remembered that i had a friend with an 85 GSL that we both though the secondaries werent working and ****. I played with them and made them mechanical and it still didnt fix the problem. Then, I replaced the filter remembering what my car did, and that still didnt help. We had given up on it for the day and drove out to a local pool hall. When we went to leave, his car wouldnt start. I noticed the fuel pump wasnt working. So, I raced to the auto store before they closed, got a pump, and installed it in a McDonalds parking lot with hand tools and no jack . His car ran 110% better and felt perfectly strong after that. He actually out ran my 85 GSL on the way home for the first time since he owned it. Just some more food for thought .
