Is it worth buying

I have resently found a 1980 SA rx7 I stoped today to talk to the guy if he wanted to get rid of it and I was just wondering if it would be worth buying it.
Heres the description.

It has a full exhoust on it.
Air pump, AC and rats nest have bin removed
The transmision has bin rebuilt and it has rebuilt brakes and master cilider
It has a front spoiler and a wrap around wing on it.
and gold 14" mesh rims on it.
the interior is clean no cracks in the dash or anything it needs some cosmetic repairs done to it but its not bad and it needs the engine rebuilt becouse it is leaking oil. He sead it ran before he parked it but we couldnt get it started becouse there was no gas left and the battery was dead once I asked how much he wanted he sead he would take $1000 for it. I personally think it is worth it I just thouth I would ask other opinions. I will go by there tomorow or tuesday to take some pictures of it.

Thanks

If it was local to me I would pick it up, then just buy a new short block and throw it in there and get back on the road. The price seems reasonable for the car as long as there is no major rust problems (look behind the storage bins, it takes like 30 seconds and is worth it...)

Or even better if the oil leak isn't the dreaded dowel pin leak (oil leaking from between the aluminum housings) and is from somewhere else, ie. the OMP or the oil cooler or something like that... then you really will get your moneys worth.

Just to give you an idea of prices I bought a rebuilt 12a long block locally this year and it had 30,000-40,000 kms on it for 700 bucks Canadian, so that should give you an idea of what kinda money your talking about here. With a little money and work you can have that car looking awesome.

Sounds good.

I've even fixed the dowel pin leak by thorough cleaning and Industrial JB Weld. Maybe you gotta redo once a year, but it's easy and cheap.

Well if i get it I would probably stick with the engine that is there since it is the original engine and it has 249K miles on it and if the apex seal arent broken I am preatty much in the strayth from there.

does not sound to bad, I dont like to pay that much for a bad engine car, But if the body is in good shape then it is worth it.

good luck pulling the storage bins, there aren't any. SA's did not have them.
I think it is a decent price. Pretty rare for a rotary to have a leak causing a rebuild. Unless it is the leak of death.

If your driveway isn't full of cars and you have curb space buy it.

I would try a lower price cash in hand and see what happens. Try $600-700.

I agree... put $700 in an envelope with his name on it and hold it out there for him. Tell him, "$700 cash right now...I'll buy it" and see what he does. Good luck.

Post pics.
