Worn out brake pads?

I was doing a general inspection on my car today, and i noticed that the gap between the brake caliper and the rotor looks really small. From what I know of brake design (not much), this might indicate that the pads a wearing thin. Is this a telltale sign, and if not, what would be the appropriate method for checking (I have some Mitutoyo digimatic calipers, by the way, so i can measure very accurate thicknesses)? also, do my rotors look like they need to be replaced? I've never seen that type of discoloration before, is why I'm asking. Thanks

If that were mine I'd turn the rotors (.669 is throw away) and replace the pads. Stock replacement pads are way cheap and its cheap insurance.

You should spend a day and examine your brakes more carefully.

Take the pads out and examine the thickness. Manuals will tell you how thick they should be but it's pretty easy to tell.

Also regarding rotors. Typically if you see uneven pad wear (one part wearing deeper than the other) then you have a warped rotor.

Some people will machine their rotors to smooth the surface out, but I'd just buy new ones if you can afford it.

Another sign of warped rotors is a pulsating pedal, when you press the pedal down it will vibrate if they are badly warped.

the pads on the race car (hawks) have a "wear notch" i guess you could call it. so its pretty obvious on those if there wearing thin. also on the rotors... check for tiny cracks that are beginning on the face of the rotor. im not sure how much this happens on street cars tho.
