Bad Magnetic Triggers

I have a 13 B that was built by Tri-Point in 1986. The engine was bought to install into a kit-car. The car was never built by the previous owner so he sold it to me. I am in the process of completing it. I had it running but it was very hard to start and ran rough. I installed a MSD set-up, it runs the same. I checked the MSD by pulling the wirers running to the Magnetic trigger, crossing them and I have a incredible spark. When I reatached the wirers and crank the motor over no spark at the leading plugs. To me this tells me that the magnetic trigger is bad. The question is can they go bad? Is this common or could it be something else? The trailing side has a nice spark. If this is the problem is there any other way to replace it other then pulling the Distributor? I have to 12A's for parts, are the distributors the same for a 12A as they would be for a 13B? This 13B is a early one I beleive a 1974 tru 1978. Thanks in advanced for any help.

The distributors are different between the 12A and 13B, as well as between a 70's 13B and an 80's 13B.

Where is this magnetic trigger located? What does it look like?
