Won't go into reverse!!!!

I bought a 83 rx7 for $250 and i've been fixing it little by little for school. I got it to run now, but the next problem arouse. I tried putting it in reverse and it just doesn't wanna budge in there. The rest of the other gears are little hard to ingage. Do you think it might be the master or slave cylinder?? Or even worse the clutch.. please help..

Welcome to the forum

These cars are stubburn to put into revers on any given day, but this is likely not your problem. Any way try putting it into anyother gear befor reverse, like fourth, and then revrese.

There was just a thread about this, a search will help you find it.

But like I said this is probably not your problem.

Good luck

Double clutch....if you're not familiar with this, put the stick in the middle (neutral) let off the clutch and push it again then try putting it in reverse... it's a good thing to double clutch downshifting as well to help save your synchros. Again, put the stuck in neutral, rev the engine to match the rpms of what it will be after you get it in the gear then hit the clutch again to put it into that gear. this will help alot with your gears being so "stiff" they'll slide in much better, it'll take a while to get the hang of it, but after about a week of practice you'll master it.

Check your clutch fluid resivour, make sure it's full... i'm sure you know that it requires brake fluid for the hydraulic.

When I started fixing my rex up, I noticed that I was having some clutch problems.

The main things to do are:
1. Change the tranny fluid. Get some RedLine MT-90 (available at www.summitracing.com I believe, or a local performance car store)
2. Change your master and slave clutch cyls and bleed the system.

The clutch cyls can be had at reasonable prices from either a local Rx place (if there is one) or forum members. If you're looking for new, check Victoria British's catalog. They have pretty damn good prices.

If you do ALL that and it's still completely refusing to go into reverse, I can't help ya, but O 16581 72452 5 was right about our cars not always going into reverse nicely.

It's RWD. Just floor it, turn the wheel and spin around, if you gotta go in the other direction.

Change trans fluid with MT-90.

Flush the clutch cylinder to boot.

Put her in 1st then try reverse.

often just putting it in 1st or 4th, then into reverse works.

Reverse doesn't have synchros, so shifting into one of the fwd gears aligns the gear for you.
