Wiring, lighting and a simple Fuse
Wiring, lighting and a simple Fuse
Alright here is my problem, I'm hoping one of you smart guys can help me out. After getting and installing a new gauge cluster, (the tach and oil gauges went out and I got a totally new cluster replacing the old speedo for milage reasons) and then taking the time to install those white faced gauge covers that change 6 different colors (I think most people have seen them). Everything seemed to be working fine then a couple of days later when I tried to turn my head lights off the lights wouldn't go down. I checked the fuses and the 10 amp tail/Illum had been blow. I replaced it and the light went down. But when I turned the lights on agian the same thing happened. I could here a slit buzz though come from the dimmer switch. Right now my dimmer switch is totally apart and I have a temp solution to the problem. The three wires coming to the switch are black (which I believe is a negitive wire) the Red and blue, and a red and green wire. When the red and blue and black wires are connected everything works and no fuse is blown but if I try to add the red and geen to the combo I blow the fuse. Without the red and green wire connected though the light in my gauge cluster don't work along with the lights in the center concole. Can anyone help me or give me some idea to what might be going on. I have fegured out though the problem is not the guage cluster or the new white guage faces. Also if it might be useful the power for the guage faces are connected to the red and green and black wire, but the same problem happens even if they are not connected.
If I understand you correctly, you are adding more circuits to your dimmer switch and its blowing the fuse...
Right?
Your new gauges need to be fuse seperate and have its own circuit but have a relay turn on the backlight when your headlights come on.
Basically, I think you are overloading the stock dimmer switch with the new gauges back light load.

The dimmer switch is not in the car. Just direct wires. Could this be my problem? The dimmer switch I have is toast I need to get a new one but just haven't found time to run to a juck yard. Nearest one is a 30 min drive
If I were to give my gauges a new home to power how hard would that be? There own circuit but linked to headlights. Same princable just a little different method
