Winter Car
Hehe, I could have had a Beetle, but it's long gone. I almost bought a Subaru BRAT, but the old lady wanted too much for the condition that it was in. Besides, I couldn't open the hatch...yikes!
I stopped by a garage today with a rust-bucket Volvo up on the lift. It had no quarter panels, but it ran with almost 375k miles on it. This thing was so beat that it got me thinking that maybe I should look into one of these Volvos..
True, rust is the biggest weakness on any car, but you've gotta love those old subarus. Have any of you guys seen the off-roading video that was posted on the lounge a while ago which featured someone's old subaru? I think there should be a sequel to that. It was hilarious.
Hmm, well I have to drive mine. Here's what I'm going to do.
i) Take it to Krown..get them to spray extra heavy on the rear wheel wells.
ii) Throw some Snow tires on andr get adjustables
iii) Take it easy.

Forseti I recomend you put at least 50lbs of weight over each rear wheel. My friends dad owns a transmission shop and they have a old accord there and a old jimmy. I may buy one of the two. Jimmy would be great because of 4x4. But cant beat honda reliabilty and gas mileage hmmmm...
If your posi is functioning well, the first gen makes a great snow car. (I grew up in upstate NY and never had a problem --though the weight over the rear wheels is good advice) However, Ive been toying with the idea of getting a 323GTX for the winters. The only problem is I think I might start to love the car too much to drive it in the sand and salt.
Really, now that I think about it, the best characteristic for a winter beater is total contempt for the car you choose. This way, if you slide it into a snow bank, or the body falls off the car due to rust, it's no big deal...

old van......
I'm with you Mark S. you have to hate your winter beater, make it like a old caravan or a old caprise. some pos that you would never in a million years wanna work on/upgrade etc. then when winters over make it a backyard rally car

i got a 96 s10 thinking it would be a winter car, not that it snows here or anything, but i dont like driving the rex when its cold, its hard to start and ****. so anyways insurance was too much so now the rex sits in the garage, and the s10 gets the mod budget. by the way the s10 was free, i wouldnt have bought it.
bull ****, the gm 3.8 is one of the coolest motors ever. haha i have a 91 buick lesabre and that thing is just as fast as my rex, and i beat the **** out of it non stop. i love that car, i love my rex more and thats why its going to be a sad day putting it away for the winter, but still my buick is the ****. 3.8 or rotary all the way!!!!
yea if you want a fun taurus..get a SHO... lots of fun you can find them cheap sometimes....but my winter car is a good old 87 jeep cherokee 4x4.. (long lives AMC) but i still drive the ole rx's around in the winters...its fun all year !!!!!
Hmm, what about a old box-like Chevy with a 305 V8 that's inspeted 'till next year, also in decent shape for $500?
lowpro - How in the world did you pull a Volvo out of a ditch with your FB?

the posi works well in the winter, with good tires. Don't get any wheels off the road though or you will get stuck. I borrow 2 or 3 25lb. sacks of lead shot from a shotgun range and put that in the back, big improvement.
If I could afford a beater I would definately get one though. my '7 deserves a break
