Will Tranny from 80 fit into 85GS?

I found an 85 GS minus a tranny for sale. I was wondering if I can take the transmission from my 80 base rx and put it in the 85GS. Also, if it can be done how much time is envolved.

By the way the tranny from the 80 is a 5 speed, i've heard they come in 4 too. If anyone knows, yes or no, (if it will fit) it would help because I want to get this car right away, to work on it today and tomorrow or not get it at all.

thanks

Yes, I read that thread, where it says 81- will fit on an SE, but I want to know if the 1980 tranny will all be the same as the 85GS, 12A to 12A.

There was a four speed available in the earlier RX7.

The smooth transmission gear case was used from 1979 to 1992 on all non-turbo chassis (12a & 13b). So the probability of it working is exceptionally high.

Where’s the tranny out of the ’85?

I've read where the 79-80 tranny had the shifter 2" futher back, and when installing an 81+ tranny into a 79-80 body a hole has to be cut for the shifter, so given that, and 79-80 tranny into an 81+ car, the shifter would need a hole cut for it to fit.
I think you can swap the tailhousing, but not 100% sure on that.

Speaking as someone who has installed a '79-'80 5 speed into where a ribcase 4 speed used to be, the shifter lined up, but the tranny mount didn't.

You are trying to mount a tranny with the standard (old school) shifter location into a 'remote shifter' car. This will cause the shifter to poke up too far forward. You could possibly redo the center console or swap the tail shaft, but I'm not sure how much success you will have with either swap. You will also need to cut the shifter hole in the sheet metal a little further forward if you keep the '80 tranny as is.
