wierd electrical issue

Hey guys,

In my quest to get my 79 going I have come across a wierd issue tonight. It seems the key in the ignition buzzer works while the car is running, and after it is shut down it stays on until I pull the key,and then after re-inserting it the buzzer stays off until I start it again, and will stay on while the engine is on.I don't want to just remove the buzzer because I like the warning. Also the overhead room light will come on if the switch is in the door position, and the doors are closed.

My next issue is with the warning lights. We installed a 2nd gen alternator, and wired up a relay to make the GEN light still work, and the voltmeter/tach as well. When we first fired the car up tonight it worked flawlessly, but after about a dozen starts, and stops of the engine the GEN light stays lit,as well as the add coolant light. Also the tach stays functioning like the voltmeter all the time now.Any help on any of these issues would be appreciated.Maybe we have the relay wired wrong but I doubt it because it worked right earlier in the night, but not later.

Now I need to go down the checklist of things left to do.Like tires,cap/rotor/wires,new brake pads,a new door handle for drivers side, tranny fluid, rear end fluid, bleed brakes/clutch,and I am sure other things I have missed.I planned to upgrade to the 80+ brakes, but I will see how bad the 79 system is first before I jump to that.I would like to stay close to stock.

Thanks in advance

Chris

I have a feeling that the alternator is not charging as nothing is feeding juice to the field terminal. Start the car and use a VOM to find out if its charging or not. If its charging, you should get at least 13.5 volts. Also, did you remove the external voltage regulator and placed 2 jumpers? https://www.rx7club.com/1st-gen-archive-71/electrical-83-alt-79-a-369140/

Now for brake upgrade, I recommend an 81-85 front and rear.

Hey in case anyone cares,I have made some headway on my electrical issues. It turns out the warning buzzer staying on,and the interior light being on even with the doors open was a really easy fix.It turns out on the 79 models the hatch being open turns on the interior light at the rear view mirror, and will cause the warning buzzer to stay on.I have had the hatch open for months while I was working on it,and didn't give it much thought when I was getting the car running. My 83 does not turn the interior light on with the hatch open so I missed this as being a problem at first.

The warning light trouble isn't happening anymore, but I am not sure why. They stay on shortly after the car starts, but if I rev it up a bit the lights go out.The tach is acting funny, and I think this may coincide with the warning light issue.I think the tach is stuck between it duty as a voltmeter, and a tachometer, and this may be due to the alternator not working properly.I am going to try a different alternator, and do some more inspecting of my wiring to figure this out,but I am on the fast track to getting this thing roadworthy. Thanks again for all the help.
