Widest tire on GSL-SE stock rims

Like the title says, what's the widest tire I can get for the stock 14'' rims at the rear. I know you can't go over 205 in the front. I know someone selling 225/60/14 at a good price and yes I did a search.

I've never tried it or anything, but I think your stock rims will too narrow for a proper fit with those tires. I've got 14x6 rims and 205's are a nice fit, but I wouldn't go any wider. I think that for 225's you'd probably want a 7.5" or 8" wheel.

As well, I don't think you can get any good street tires in that kind of size anymore. From what I've seen, the best tire available for a 14x6 inch wheel is the Toyo Proxes T1-S in a 195-55 size. That's what I'd go for if I were buying tires right now, they're supposed to be phenomenal.

they'll fit the rear of the car, but i don't know if they rub. i know they'll rub the front. i've seen it on an SE before, BUUUUUT ... i'd agree with silverrocket on this subject. there are very few good tires out there for 14" rims that narrow.

yokohama should still make the AVS Intermediates in 205/60V ... call up the TireRack (get the number from www.tirerack.com) and ask them, you should get them for a great price!

The AVS Int's are discontinued, but if you can find them they'll likely be at a great deal... they're very good tires.

I recommend you upgrade to 16" rims.

I'm running 205/50R16s on mine and there was an instant improvement in cornering. Of course the tradeoff is a slightly more jarring ride, but if you want a floating ride get a Lincoln

According to Yokohama's web site the width range for 225/60's is 6-8 inches.

I have seen a couple 1st Gen's with 215's on the front and rear. The wheels may have not been stock, but I seem to remember they were.

I'm not sure on this but is the stock backspacing for a first Gen 5"? I Have 4" backspacing on my 8" wide race wheels and the inside edge is definantly out further than with my street wheels. So if you change to 4" backspacing you could run wider rims, like 7" or 8" and have no problem putting on 225's. Of course mine are 13". 14" might rub when turning the wheel lock to lock.

Thanks for all the advice. I would like to upgrade the rims but I can't afford it right now and my stock rims are in such good shape, I can't justify spending money on it. Anyway, I did look at the Yokohama website and they do have a suggested rim size for 225/60/15 as 6"-8" wide. Now let me confirm that our stock wheels are 6" wide and not 5.5", correct?

Yes but they are 5.5" JJ isn't that a different measurement on the rim to the usual single J measurement ? Most rims are specified as the width in inches with a single J after it ... I always thought that the JJ meant that the 5.5" JJ's were in fact wider than if you got a 5.5" J

Or am I'm getting confused ?

Bottom line: those tires are too wide for stock width rims. 6" might be the bare minimum, but won't be a proper fit. Seriously, go with a 205 at the most and you'll be much happier. You don't need 225s, all you need are stickier tires, and as previously mentioned, the stickiest tires are only available in 195's anyways.

5.5" huh! That pretty much takes care of what I will be getting, 205 or 195s. There is not much to choose from in a 205 size anyway but seems like tirerack has the sumitomos at a great price. Thanks all.

Try the new Falken Azenis tires that come in 195/60r14. I know their only 195 but they out handle my old 205's. I just put them on last week and they are awsome.
