Hey man, you like your Detriot power, I respect that... I'm not going to say, "CUT THE MULLET!!!" or ask if you have a gun rack on your RX-7... Because I respect the American engines... Everything down to the 34975835th last moving part... All 400 Lbs of cast iron block wich timing belt snapping, head gasket blowing power...

I like good american classics... Mustangs, Camaros, Vettes, Chargers, and such from the 60's and 70's... The Ford 302, The Chevy 305 and 350, the Dodge Hemi...

However, Some of us like the rotary too... Sure it's got the impressive torque numbers of 460 in/lbs @ 9,000 RPM... Sure it looks like a beer keg with some manifolds glued to it and spark plugs drilled in the sides... Some enjoy the challange of extracting power from this thing. Some enjoy the uniqueness of having one of the few production cars with this engine.

Please respect us in return.

I understand there's guys out there that say, "**** THE BOINGERS! Anyone who has a V8 sleeps with their sister!"... There's also guys out there who say, "Those UnAmerican bastards buying gook cars suck. Their lack of torque is proportional to their lack of a *****."

Anyone with these narrow views should be stoned in public under the charge of being an *******. However, most of us are respectable car enthusiasts...

Can't we all just get a long?

Thanks.

hehe mullet....
Anyway, I have something moderatly useful for this thread. I think...
After rx7carl explained what exactly all those pics are last night i go excited (even more than i already was) and started searching around and found this on ebay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=33589
There was another one too but it ended. This raises a few questions:
1. What years are we looking for?
2. If we buy a new one like that off ebay what else will we need?
I guess thats it for now.

mullet, what mullet??? I do respect you guys, you have to remember that most of us V8 guys were rotary guys first. I'm just sick of not getting respect from you guys, so what I don't have the money to put into a rotary. My car is fast, handels well and I love to drive it, I think that's what counts. And most importantly, I like the rest of you want rack and pinion steering on my 7. And If it were not for me, that 85GS would be in pieces in the junkyard. Long live engine swapping.

i agree with your above statement, the 81 rx7 i am in the process of restoring/v8 swaping would have still been sitting in my dads salvage yard if i had not seen some articles about the swap, i too do not have the money for the rotary upgrades, and we have like a million(exaggeration) american motors and parts so for me its easier and cheaper, I too am very interested in this rack and pinion, i hate fabing stuff, and would be interested in your kit, i could prob send u a rack and steering gear and some cash and you could make it or whatever so its just bolt it, but i would like to know how it would go with the v8 swap

The avatar was just there when I joined and I dont know how to put my 1st gen in there. Hey guys my Cosmo arrived yesterday from Tokyo and just 4u guys Im not going to play it or tear it apart or anything. Im only going to play with the rack kit to get it finished and the rack on E-Bay is what you need along with the tie rods and U shaped rubber mounts with the steel U retainers.

Good work J! Are you trying to fab drop down brackets that bolt into the "through the frame holes" left by removing the steering box and idler arm? I think I can fab up something like that very easily. Also, I think if you can relieve/reshape the oil pan, it will even work on a car with a V8. (a 302 with double sump oil pan anyways) Also, the rack can be positioned a cm or two back towards the crossmember. The xmember lip can be cut and boxed flat for clearance as well.

There is plenty of room here for the rack itself. With the steering box gone, there won't be any clearance issues with the headers.

J Oliver, are you close to posting the pic of the rack in place with the engine removed?

Yes in about 2hrs I hope! I will post the pics only using the template prototype cause Im getting my steel one nickle cadium plated. Oh ya it does use the through frame holes because it is the stongest point on the frame rails. I was going to put the rack in front of the motor like a 2nd gen but using the VW rack will not allow this, when I turned the steering wheel clockwise the wheels went left. (no good, kinda scary to drive i would say!)

Looking at your pics I think with the box gone you may have even more room with the rack.
WooooooHooooo, Lucky you!

Seriously guys, one person mentions the word V8 for any reason around here, and 6 people jump in and start wailing on him. It seems to me like the rotorites are the ones being disrespectful in this case. Anyways, It would apear that the rack would fit, it would just have to sit a little lower I think. Shorten thearms a little and there should be no problems with bump steer. I look forward to the pics.

1 more thing they are not drop down brackets(I wish) It seemed to be much more involved than that. If I would have known that there were so many variables to cotend with I probably would have just bought a new $800.00 Mazda box ($800??)
But now that all the "Sleepless" nights are over and I have it figured out you guys can just bolt it in in a few hours. My biggest fear was somthing happening with the kit and someone getting killed because my VW rack idea did'nt work. Thats why I have put so much time in making sure the thing is not just gonna break or fall off or rip out of the frame under hard cornering. I am letting my friend take his 1st gen with rack on over to Mosport and try to break the steering or have it fail. He is absolutely BRUTAL, if it can withstand the Rod test NO ONE WILL BREAK IT. Hopefully the car will fall apart around the rack kit. (IT WILL GARUNTEED)
What r people willing to pay and will people want everthing or just the bracket. I am not out to make a killing in any way. I no longer work or even have a job, I injured my back in 1999, had surgury and have been off work since. It takes me longer to do stuff because I have to break every hour and take freakin pain killers so bear with me. Oh ya plus were all like family so Im willing to help us have steeing of the optimum kind. Any imput is still wanted, with concerns on fab, chassis dynamics, selling, shipping, finishes and such...
Enough talk must go work on car!!
I have a COSMO engine, are you guys not excited!

Yea, thats looking real good man. In response to your questions I would want everything "custom" required to make this swap work. There are plenty of junkyards out here to get the rabbit parts from, or ebay, but as for the bracket and column adapter I'd prefer to just buy it. As for price I have no idea what I would pay. I have no idea how much its gonna cost you to make the stuff, plus theres shipping to think about, plus all the time you have invested in this. I think the price is something you're gonna have to think up in order to feel satisfied. Oh yea, everyone please just shut the **** up about the goddam v8 swaps. does it really matter? does it?

That is looking about what I envisioned J. I see that you don't have the steering column all bolted up but it looks like it will be at quite an angle for that u-joint. Then again, maybe it's just the camera angle playing tricks and making it look that way. Are you planning on putting that 20B in your 1st gen? That would be sweet dude.

Just so I can make some guesstimates, what is the diameter of the rack itself and what is the length minus the tie rods? Thanks. Looks like you can sign me up for a kit too!
