who here thinks there 7 is killing them

for one I believe my own 7 is killing me slowly... even with the windows up i can smell exhaust inside... my weatherstrip are bad, but is that letting bad air in??? everytime i get out of my car... i get a light head or trobbing pain in my head... I'm still trying to buy a CO detector to see if it really is killing me.... if you feel the same way... post

Probably you have a few exhuast leaks.

Engine to manifold or header gasket. Or the one from the header to the rest of the exhaust. I had the same issue when I gutted my cats a long time ago and it had all kinds of holes afterwards. I sugguest inspecting your exhuast thourghly and then determine whether you need to get new or not. Then replace all the gaskets with new ones and be sure to use new bolts+nuts.

While you have the exhaust off, take a belt sander to each flange and make them FLAT. This will help a lot if you can't seem to get a good sealed exhaust.

Finally if you have the moon roof open and you do currently have exhaust leaks, it does draw exhaust into the cabin and will make you sick. So keep the moonroof closed and use the windows or fan instead till you get them fixed. Another problem is since I assume you don't run a cat or its very old and worn out, it doesn't clean up the emissions and it will smell bad in traffic. Causing a lot of HC's getting into the car in stop-and-go traffic.

My'82 was like that. It had so many holes in the back that it was nearly impossible to seal it up. Make sure your over axle pipe isn't leaking and check the rear hatch weatherstripping. Another place to check is the rear light clusters. They have weatherstripping that goes between them and the body, and if those go, exhaust will get sucked up into the cargo area.

Oh, and stop driving your car until you fix it. Exhaust is not frikking good for you. CO2 can build up in your system until you just drop dead one day from oxygen starvation. It also kills brain cells harder than alcohol.

I had a pickup truck that had a cracked heater core and that allowed fumes to spew into the cabin, so that is another place to check. The rest has already been covered.

Man I think my obsession with 7's is trying to kill me. I did not get any sleep last night bc I was trying to figure out how I could my this FC convertable I looked at on the weekend, and get the moon roof I found on the weekend. So today I feel like crap, but not because of exhaust fumes. It is trying to kill my bank account too. I have picked up some thing or another for my car wevery week since I pulled it out of storage this year.

any way good luck with the leak, and ya CO can sneak up on you and next thing you know you wake up dead...so please be careful

What you smell is unburn HC's, lack of cats will make this smell much more pronouced. It doesn't directly make you sick unless you breath it in large concentrations for a while, also makes your eyes water. Also the benzene in it will cause cancer over time also if you breath it in too often.

Carbon monixide-> CO is a colorless, oderless gas that is also present in untreated exhuast. It is many times more able to stick to blood cells then 0xygen. And it sticks there for a long time which is why is slowly sufficates its victims in closed envirments, and makes you feel tired/sick in large concentrations. Sulfer dixoxide(rotten egg smell) is also pretty harmful but gasoline refineries are supposed to remove sulfer from the fuel as emission standards become more and more strict each year.

So its a good idea to get fresh air for a couple days to let it naturally remove CO from your body's system if you breathed in sigificant amounts.

I agree also, CO detecters should be standard equipment on cars.

The #1 culprit for this, as mentioned prior, is the right rear tailight to body rubber seal/gasket. Also if any of the grommets are missing in the rear cargo area, it also doesn't help. Replace the seal if neccesary and you should feel a whole lot better... if not let me know and I'll go pick the car up from you and test it for a few years...

my 85 smelt bad and spewed blue/black smoke when i got it. i worked on it (changed plugs, oil, etc, etc), tuned it up, and pushed it HARD (to try and burn out crap in the engine since i doubt the previous owner even passed 4000 rpms)...

no probs now, cept for the occasional tune up

hehe,

My exhaust system consists of the stock manifold, with a muffler rigged up directly to that. It lets out basically under the passenger floor.

At stoplights, with the windows down, all I smell is exhaust.

I think by now, I am addicted to the smell. I need a good dose of HC's to keep me relaxed during the day.

Lol.. and to think, I've been trying to get info on what I need to pass a safety check, and five minutes ago I read

"the tailpipe must not output exhaust under or directly next to a window that opens"

and the door definitely has one of those be thankful you don't have to pass a safety check.. It also said something about the proximity to a passenger door, which I'm sure you're breaking... and another rule about outputting directly under or in any area that is occupied by passengers....

mine did the same thing, but i don't think to the extent of yours. i had an exhaust leak, and that was the culprit... so i bought a header, and did a full straight through exhaust setup, and PRESTO! all better

You are correct in every thing that you said about CO, however CO does not buind directly to the RBC (Red Blood Cell) it buindes to the Iron complex Heamaglobin. This complex is caried by the RBC, but the oxygen, or CO does not buind directly the Red Blood Cell.

This is why Iron is important in your diet.

Any way that's all I'm not trying to pick **** or anything like that, just educate people where I can
