Who has a CP racing roll bar?

I'm looking for pictures really, the one on the CP site doesn't help much. I'm considering buying one, but I wanna see how it goes in, and what mods would be required to use a full interior.

Will not meet most organized race specifications due to absence of a diagonal bar - little better than cosmetic, imo.

Hey 82, havent seen you around in a while. Yea no offense to CP but that bar isint all that great. It doesnt even conform to the body, keeping it far from the frame in key areas. Kirk and Autopower make decent bolt on rollbars/cages that will do the job and meet saftey rules of most if not all sanctioning bodies (meaning they are of a proven safe design). Your best bet is to have one made by a decent race shop in your area that works on 1st gens. After shipping, even the autopower or Kirk will be $$$.

I've been lurking in the shadows like a ninja or some ****. Ok, so it sounds like CP's is out. The car I want to put this in is gonna be a street machine (maybe occational auto x but no more) and I want it to be as stiff as possible while still being somewhat useable. I would assume a roll bar would help stiffen things up significanly right? I'm about to start seam welding this car (if it would stop raining, damn humidity is so high I can't paint) and doing the rest of the body work, and if I am going to put a roll bar in this would be the time to do it (so I can weld it in before I finalize any paint etc) Anyway, what do you guys think of that?

Not local to you but check out Izzy's Custom Cages They do some fantastic work plus they race in the IT-7 or Spec-7 don't remember which or if that is the samething Price isn't bad either but shipping, as Carl mentioned, will be $$$.

If you're just looking to street it and not doing much else why do you feel that you need a rollbar? Wouldn't seem welding and putting in front and rear triangulated strut/shock bars work just as good and save you some weight gain too? The rollbar is going to add some weight to the car. Something to think about.

The only reason (and I'll be going with Izzy's Custom Cages) that I want one is because I love to drive the twisties around here and I'm tall. I think a roll over, if one ever happend, would be pretty bad for me unless I had a rollbar in there to prevent the roof collapsing too far.

Check out my roll bar, the set up is exellent. I think it'd be rad to have someone put a roll bar in the same way. Don't ask me what the bar is welded to I don't know. www.cardomain.com/id/mazdagslse

Mike, I want it for the same reason you do, I'm tall, rip it up on the backroads, and its a sunroof car, so I don't feel nearly as safe as I would with the hardtop car. As for the additional weight, I'm not that concerned about it, since I'll have no A/C, no sound deadening tar (or very little at least) and I'll be short a few other items, so overall the car shouldn't be too much heavier than it was before.
One option I just thought of might be to design my own using small tubing of some kind (as a template), and then bringing it to a good exhaust shop or something and having it made that way. There really aren't too many performance shops around here, and the couple there are do mostly american drag machines, I wouldn't trust them with my car. So going with this idea, what are good attachment points? I assume that large crossmember right behind the seats (that the bins attach to) would be good for the 'hoop' but where could the rear bars attach? Could this work or should I just not waste my time? oh and thanks for the links/pics everyone.

I would try to attatch it on that x-member right above the "frame rails" that run from frount to rear under the floor. Then I would run my rear down bars to the top of the coil buckets.

Might look for an off-road truck shop to do your cage. Just tell them what you want and they should be able to wip it out in a couple of hours.

I, too, am tall and rolled Pam rather forcefully over jagged boulders with my glass sunroof installed - and walked away with minor nicks and cuts Our cars are amazing.

Scott races in IT-7. I was gonna buy a cage from him and have it locally installed. His cage is one of the best I've seen, but the shipping was gonna be too $$$.

82, search the net for pics of 1st gen cages to help you see how it should be installed. Izzy's site should be your starting point.

Since I'm local, I'll see if I can get some pics of some of his cages up close. The cage I saw in his 7 welds to the cross member in the bin area and back at the shock tower area just off of the front of the shock housings. Awesome setup!

thanks for all the advice everyone, I'll start searching. when you say too expensive on the shipping, how much would it have been?
I'll have to look around for shops, theres gotta be someone who could help me out around this area.
I just got in from removing the sound dedening "tar" (its more of a plastic IMO, as it came out in big chunks and not really sticky) and found a bunch more rust on the floor, so I have my work cut out for me as far as getting the body in good shape, so I have some time to think about the roll bar.
thanks again guys

Almost as much as the cage costs. Thats how bad on the shipping. He's trying to find an economical way to ship it to expand his possibilities.

Theres got to be some decent shops in your area. Theres plenty of SCCA club racing going on up there.

thanks alot, that gives me at least some idea, one thing, do you have any pics of it at the same angle as the second shot, but with the seats forward? I'd like to see where it goes through the bins. Also, what does it actually mount to in the front? Wheel wells? that cross member? Thanks again.

Those pictures were taken yesterday from his IT-7 race car. The cage was made for the IT-7 spec so he has a full cage with extra bracing. Don't get discouraged by the extra stuff in the pics. He can make the cage or roll bar any way you want it.
