Does the smoke smell like oil? Sounds like oil control rings, in which case you should run a search for Lucas Heavy Duty Oil Stabilizer...

the motor is getting old, and the oil control rings are loosing their ability to with hold oil from being burned, there for letting more get past the rings & be burned, thus the smoke.since it was up so high in the rpms, it got hot, and the rings expanded, and let that oil past. Nothing to worry about, if anything you're getting more lubrication. Just check the oil level at every fill up since it is now burning a little more than it would stock. All gsl's have lsd from the factory, unless someone switched it out. does it have rear disc? then chances are you still have your lsd

if its an INSANE amount of smoke it could be oil in the exhaust pipe. i did the ATF treatment to my first rx7. there was a build up of oil in teh exhaust. whenever the car would back fire itd send out a smoke screen.

Make sure the oil level is not too high. That will also cause this... Otherwise, like I said, check out Lucas.
