where to start..literally

my 7 is having some startup issues...recalling the water incident the problem surfaced then and keeps returning..now it's full time
upon first startup: engine cold: the rpms jump up to 4100 rpm..to me this is crazy..and it sounds the same..braaaa braaaa very loud
after 3 minutes or so it goes down then hunts between 2500-3400 rpm..constantly
if I depress the clutch/not into gear the rpms will settle to 2200 rpm constant..but it sounds like a lawnmower
once underway it surges if you coast in gear...at a stoplight it will hunt again unless I keep the clutch in..then it just hovers at 2000 rpm
once fully warmed up this all goes away for the most part, it idles normal has power
occassionally it will up the revs at a light, but nothing like when it's cold
I do need to change the plugs..they look worn
the dist cap and rotor check out
the TB's have been oiled and I know the solenoid on the secondaries is functioning at startup and after engine is warm
I am a complete dult at technical stuff on these cars but I'm learning.. I know enough to fix many of the common issues
in my area I don't know of any competent mechanics for a rotary
the original advice was to check the ecu after the water incident
could it cause these issues? and yet the car runs normal after warmup?
any help from the experts greatly appreciated!
she's an 84 GSL-SE

and I am assuming disconnecting the battery and jabbing the brakes isn't going to reset these old ecu's?

check the grounds, fuel filter and make use all the linkages move correctly. check to make the TPS is working correctly. Check your grounds.

Maybe its just full of deposits and needs to be cleaned. Try cleaning it with sea foam.

I hope something helps out. You shouldn't sell her.

Big NO to the idea of selling her, she's just sick right now and if you give her a little medicine (seafoam maybe) she will get over it.

i have been in your shoes i too at times have wanted to sell my 7. I said the ultimate blashpemy once... i said i would rather have a honda than this piece of crap.. yeah i was mad over a stupid vacuum leak. Once you fix it you will wonder why u ever thought of selling her.

on to the problem, try changing out the plugs that may help and/or the coils.

wouldn't you know...less than a couple months ago I ran seafoam through her
I'll change the spark plugs and possibly the coils and see what happens
I left her unplugged overnight..will see what happens on first startup this morning
I can probably source an ecu off a member..not sure what kind of price yet
I'm willing to try

battery disconnected all night:
startup was perfect and normal idle
no hiccups during short drive
maybe time for a new(er) ecu

The trailing coil is out to lunch....
so new coils, plugs, rotor and cap
should be good to go
the ecu is obviously working in compensating for the trouble
soon I'll know enough to keep this thing running for years
in the meantime I'm still learning
