where do you let out the clutch for the best start?

I cant seem to get a good start in my beast My best start was when i let out the clutch at about 4500rpm. But it still wasnt a very good one. Do you just drop the clutch, or do you let it out quickly for the best start. On Saturday there will be legal races at the airport. I want to beat my friends 240 sx. Any help will be great.

There is no absolute answer to your question. Actually the simple answer is to release the clutch at the point were the car travels the fastest.

But the real answer has tons of variables.

Different road surfaces, tire compounds, and clutch strengths all contribute to launch RPMs.
Sometimes a better time is achieved with a bog at launch, other times with some wheelspin.

The best way is trial and error. If you list your car and mods maybe someone here with a similar setup can give you a good starting point. I found that with my mildly modded 12a LSD car I launched best at around 4500RPMS give or take some for differing roads.

Just my $.02 hope it helps out some

i put it to about 4000 and let up on the clutch to where i feel it just barely biting... then when they say "go!" i will let it bite a little more before i drop it and slam the gas (u gotta get used to this)

I've got a very lightly modded rx7 (so far, my christmas brought me a new RB exhaust system and intake!) and raced my friend's 302 camino (ha, ha, ha) and his 240... i beat both--although, his shifting isnt that great... =)
240s are pretty quick... they have a tight 2nd gear, so he's got nice acceleration in 2nd... remember, don't stay in 1st too long, kill him with your 2nd and 3rd (when shifting, don't let up on gas!)

thanks guys. My mods are a racing beat header into an exhaust cut-out so basically open headers at the push of a button, and a CAI. Without mods i could get some good starts at 4000rpm. So you're saying i shouldn't rev to 7600 in first gear? 'Cause my engine will pull untill then and higher, i just dont want to blow my engine. I think I can beat my friends 240, but i would need a really good start. He doent have to worry about a good start 'case his tires are so stirck there is virtually no tire spinnage no matter how he starts.

you can do that if you want--but in my experience i like to put my 1st to about 6500 and then drop into second and bring that past 7k
I find that the best for me and my 7
drive however you feel is fastest, and remember, beat that 240
