where did the gas go????

I was getting about 25 mpg or so, have been since I got the car in november, its always run rich. Well, now for some reason, the car is getting about 10 mpg. WHAT happened? It still runs the same, no leaks, but theres a really stong fuel smell coming from the engine compartment. ANY idesa would be greatly appreciated

Uh, possibly a fuel leak? If so, poor fuel economy isn't your biggest problem--- the fire hazard is.

Start the car up and do a thorough search for fuel leaks. Do not use a match.

I can't find any leaks, I had the car up on jack stands and traced the fuel lines all the way from the tank to the carb..... all dry, even put a big *** piece of cardboard under the car and let the car run, different rpm's , and then let it sit for a while, the cardboard was dry. I'm stumped

Gas drys very quickly you wouldn't have been able to tell with cardboard underneath the car.

if you get gas on cardboard, even after it dries , you can still see where it was if you look carefully

Could it be that your gas gauge is malfunctioning and you think its empty when its not, therefore giving you bad readings?

I dont know. thats pretty weird

the gas gauge never worked... I go by the odometer and how much gas I put in it.... I should have had another 20 miles or so, and ran out..... then today, I ran it dry again :[

The fuel companys are mixing in alchol to strech the fuel so they can gain more profit means the cars burn more fuel try getting gas at another station . just a thought my car was doing the same thing went from 30mpg to 20 mpg i switched stations and it fixed the problem

Isn't the government taxing you enough already?

You're not spewing fuel somewhere at the carb by any chance? (i.e., at a gasket, where perhaps it might just vaporize?)

the carb reeks of gas, but I can find any spilling out, my exhaust smells like gas too, like I have raw gas going right through my engine, but I still have plenty of power

My truck had a milage problem and a strong fuel smell near the rear... No puddles though and I lost about 1/8 tank overnight (parked). Turns out a steel line was rusted. It disintegrated in my hands. Check all the lines. You can never be too sure.

If it's rusted, wiggle it.

If there's rubber line, bend it...

When it breaks you know your culprit. Unfortunately you better have a ride to the parts store.
