close to the gas tank on the drivers side it should be on the frame rail of the car.

Fuel filter is underneath the car on the drivers side behind the gas tank.

does it make the car run better? what am i doing to the engine by not having a fuel filter....

when i get the filter, which line do i put it though? should i follow the main line from the regulator? do i put it between the pump and the engine, or between the engine and the pump?

this works because there is a dry rotted line i need to replace.

You are letting pretty much anything thats in the tank go right into the engine, including rust flakes and dirt particles that have settled at the bottom of your tank over the last 20+ years.

I would think you should put it in between the tank and the fuel pump, so the bad stuff doesn't even get to the pump. Though, i dont know too much about that, so I can't say.

Yes the filter allways goes in between the tank and the pump. Some people add a second filter right before the carb.

the fuel filter may be within an inch or two of the pump. I know when I bought a new fuel pump(which I didn't end up needing), it came with a filter(about a 3 inch cylinder) that was connected by a two inch hose to the pump.
