So I went out to work on the 84 mazda yesturday to get it up and running. I went to take the rear wheels off so I could take then to get some new rubber. well the driver side wheel WILL NOT COME OFF !!!!!! I tried hitting the wheel from the back side with a soft hammer, but it wont come off. it came about an 1/2 to 3/4 inch out but now will not budge a bit more. any suggestions on how to get this thing off. It worries me about the brakes etc if the wheels are so rusty they wont come off.

 

Try putting the lug bolts on but not all the way and let the weight of the car down on it. Maybe bounce on bumper if that alone doesnt doit but it should.

Its always worked for me just make sure you dont leave the lugs to loose, leave about a 1/4 inch. Might bend something when it breaks loose if it has to much room to move with the weight of the car on it.

 

Like he said, loosen the lug nuts then drop the car. Rolling it forward/backwards a few times should do it.

Do you have the emergency brake set?

 

forget dropping the car. sit on your butt and kick one side of the tire and the the other side alternating side to side. not on the outside and inside but on the side facing you on either side of the rim. a swift kick should pop the wheel right off. ensure your car is firmly supported by jack stands or jack the car up enough by the diff so that the rear wheels are slightly off the ground..

 

I've tried this, moved on to a 11lb mallet,but it doesn't move anymore. I'm gonna try the other suggestion of dropping it down with wheels on, see if that works. the 13 in wheels don't give you much of a target to kick when your lying on your back under the car.

That shouldn't affect the wheel, itself.

 

You wouldn't think. But the only way for the wheel itself not to come off is if it is frozen to the drum or rotor (I should have asked it you have drum brakes). He could get lucky and pull the wheel and drum off together. Of course of it's drum and the set screw is on there then this won't work.

The sit and kick method should work. Just make sure the it has a good jack stand under it. Not one of those cheap ones either.

 

Stand in front of the tire facing away from the car and give it some good kicks. like a horse kicking something behind it. kick it a few times in the front 3 oclock and then at 9 oclock. work for me everytime. the car must be on a sturdy jack and or stand.
I dont think you get enough leverage with the sit and kick method

 

I think a little heat is the order of the day .. No sense busting your butt,, Spray some penetrating oil on the hub between the wheel and axle, put the wheel nuts back on and suck the wheel back into place .. Take your time on each nut and work around the wheel so you don't **** something up .. Just putting it back on will loosen it up a bit spray it again even spray it from the inside so it gets where it needs to be .. leave it sit for the evening .. Take the wheel nuts back off heat the wheel up a bit and stick a 2x4 long enough to reach from the other side of the car .. Place the one end up against the rim and wack the bitch with a big hammer from the other side work your way around the rim and it will come off .. No sense kicking the **** out of it all you are going to do is have sore feet . A wise man once told me use your head and save your feet.. Try it ,it will work ...
