whats the normal idle RPM for 1st gen?
whats the normal idle RPM for 1st gen?
im new to rx-7s and old cars.. so i never used a choker b4
whats the normal rpm should it start at and then gradually go down to?
what is idle? does that mean the state at which the cars engine is constantly stable?
also my rx-7 which i picked up for 4k australian (which is a pretty good price) has a few strange noises.. like the engine is not a constant noise.. it pauses a bit..but very fast .. is that normal?
"chug-chug-chug-chug-chug---chug-chug-chug-chug-chug"
it also smells like fuel..whenever the engine is running..
i took it for a ride today.. its heaps good.. and also the day b4 that.. it was a pretty sweet ride.. but i dunno what a normal rx-7 should ride like.. or sound like.. my mum was behind me she said i was pretty slow..
then again my dad was with me so he was telling me to go slow since im only on my Ls..(learners)
theres also a leak.. not all the time.. and its just small leaks.. where can i get this fixed.. is it a major problem? should i get it looked at right away ?
oh im the one with the automatic rx-7 :/
my first car..
thanx for your help guys..

If your RX7 is carbed, 12a, then the factory idle setting is 800 rpm, IIRC. This is the speed at which the engine will run smoothly at idle without a lot of problems with vibration. You may find that your slight misfire at idle may be cured by going to new spark plugs, and/or adjusting idle mixture and speed on your carb.
The idle speed screw is visible under the carb from the driver's side, and is a slotted head screw about 1cm in diameter. This can be turned left to increase, right to decrease idle speed. Immediately below the idle adjustment is the idle mixture screw, which is a cross-hatch screw about 5mm in diameter. This can be adjusted to get a smooth, consistent idle 'quality', and will often cause idle speed increase/decrease, which can then be adjusted with the idle speed screw (as mentioned first).
Juggling settings between these two will take a bit of work, but yield the best idle speed and quality trade off. HTH,

Idle: \I"dle\
1.To pass (time) without working or while avoiding work; waste: idle the afternoon away
2.To make or cause to be inactive
3. A state of idling. Used of a motor vehicle: an engine running quietly at idle
4. Time during which a machine is operational but not in use

Hey I have a question to add...
Is adjusting your idle on a 12A carb as simple as turning the screw while it's idling? My haynes shop manual is making it sound really complicated like it requires a special tach and a curtain amount of throttle and has all kinds of steps just to adjust idle. I always heard it was pretty easy.

my idle goes up tyo 3000 right away with choke but i push it in about half way and it goes down to 1600 or so then after a while i just put in in and keep it idle with my foot for about 2 mins, at 1000rpm seems to work good

With my 12A, I find that if I let it idle too long, it loads up. Getting the rpms up a bit before you let the clutch out will make the transition from stand-still to moving more smooth, rather than letting the clutch out at idle without giving the engine any gas.
My 12A idles around 800 RPMs warm, and 3K with the choke out. Also, a slight miss at idle seems to be pretty normal with the rotaries. Ive seen it on lots of cars, even my cousins third gen. On mine, I cleared it up a great deal by folowing the manual and ajusting the carb a few times.
The factory manual I have says 750 RPMs for the 12A manual, and the 12A auto in the "D" range. 800 RPMs for the 13B.

yea, all of em have that little miss at idle.
pvc: yes, just turn the screw, make sure the car is fully warmed up first. Screw what the manual says, all that crap they say is overkill.

attaching a tach allows a more precise setting- 12a @750 and 13b @ 800
allow the car to reach normal operating temp (on a 1985 you can disconnect the richer solenoid connector but remember to re-connect!!)
set your idle!!
