I get 23-24 cruising the highway at 80 mph almost all the time in my pretty much stock 84 GSL. I got about the same in my other two GSLs, an 84 and an 85, also pretty much stock. These are accurate numbers, averaged over the last 100,000 miles.

I'm averaging about 22 only thing I've done is new plugs and wires, gonna do the quality trans and diff oils, lower 3.62 3rd ratio and few more tweaks, te black one is an economy project. My red one however is another story.

The 85 GSL that I bought in August gets about 12-13 MPG regardless of whether I am on the highway or around town. RB long primary exhaust, DLIDFIS, no A/C or power steering, Weber DCOE 48, and cruise AFRs in the 10s. I expect 20 in the city once I get Megasquirt with ignition control and around 30 on the highway... when I'm running the economy map of course.

BlatinSideways, that's what happens when they don't go stock. Those Mazda engineers, you know, twenty years ago, they knew what they were doing. Back then, there was a recent gas crisis. 12-13? Time for the museum.

Thats what happens when you don't (previous owner in the case of my car) set the car up properly when its not stock. I'm not saying that mileage won't go down around town with full exhaust and carb upgrade but its not gonna change much when setup properly and it should improve on the highway because the engine can breath better. The idea that the car should be put into a museum is ridiculous. In the past twenty years very little has changed as far as basic engine design but engine management has improved vastly (EFI, ignition computer, ect...). Implementation of this engine management technology will yield impressive results, especially on a rotary which is a little more sensitive as to how fuel and spark is delivered to it. Engineering is amazing.

My 85 GSL is a gas hog. I'm lucky to get 15 city and 18 highway. Stock car no mods and always in tune. But the car is a toy for me so taht driving is mainly with my foot right in it having some fun.
