What's my custom RX-7 worth?

I'm reaching out to the RX7 community for a little help in determining the value of my 1982 Mazda RX-7. After 23 years (yes I'm the original owner) of taking up space in my garage and hearing my wife complain, it's time to find the RX7 a new home...I purchased the car new in May of 1982, used it sparingly for about two years, then decided I wanted to create a show car. After about a year's time of putting it together, followed by some time on the local circuit, the car's remained underwraps in a climate controlled garage.

I'll list some of the car's highlights and attached a few pictures, below:

-mileage: 15, 125 (yes that's the original miles on the car)
-motor: "Rotory Engineering's Turbo Alternative" 13B 225HP Twin 36 DCD carbs
-12,000 miles on the new engine itself
- body: Kent racing widebody kit from Creative Car Products, installed by Autotrix
-Rims: Epsilon 15/10 and 15/8's
- Tire size: 225-50-15 F 265-50-15 R
- Custom stereo system with remote escort (it was the hottest thing in 1987!)
- Koni race suspension all around

Keep it man, cause nobody's going to offer you what it is really worth. If you have been the original owner for the past 23 years - why sell it? Your wife needs to understand that it has sentimental value and that you've put way too much time and work to get rid of it just like that. Besides - wouldn't it **** you off if the guy you sold it ended up wrapping it around a tree a week after he buys it. Truth is that no one is really going to have as much appreciation for you car as you do.

I have one of those old rotary engineering catalogs and I remember reading about that engine package. I wish they were still around! I would keep it. You won't get much money for it. As an original owner I can't imagine getting rid of my car. You WILL miss it. Just hang onto it. Tell your wife its an investment!

I agree, if you sell it you will never regain what you have put into it at this point. If there is any way that you can hang onto it, I would strongly recommend that you do so. The value will only increase as the years go by. Very very nice car by the way!

Right now Rx-7 values are bottoming out, If you sell your car you wont get must out of it for several reasons, There are alot of tastless people out there that dont like the way these cars look, many who have heard of the rotary engine have heard bad things about it. The people who will be interested either already have an Rx-7 (like me, but luckily my wife doesnt complain, she enjoys the attention we get ) or they wont have the amount or wont be willing to put down the amount you will be asking. aftermarket modifications count for nothing in your cars value unless it is appraised. your are looking at a tiny market with millions of people who dont remember or dont know that Rx-7's were produced before 1986. I agree with everyone else, Keep it (Lol I'm married to my car and my wife knows it) so if you are determained to sell it expect to be waiting for awhile. This is a beautiful car and I'm sure you'll regret this decision later in life. Besides could your bear the thought of someone else driving your car?

You most likely won't get any more than $4-5K for it. Modifying an RX-7 only adds a little bit of value to the car. You'd be better off to hold onto it for another 5-7 years then sell it. By then the 1st gen RX-7's will have gone up in value. Don't sell it. You've owned it this long, why sell it now.

Thats a very nice 7 you got there, and its probably actually worth somewhere in the $7-8K range. Actually finding a car with that early body kit and engine setup is amazing.

As an original owner too (80), I know the feeling. I have four RX's. The only rule my wife has is: if you want another one, you have to get rid of one. Gotta love her. Not too many would put up with a driveway full of old cars.
As for the value, I agree with the above statements. I would think it should pull around 7 to 8K. You might try ebay with a high reserve. I saw an original condition 80 go with even less miles, I think it went for around 8k.

As this being my first car, My dad bought it way back in 83, then passed it on to me, I can remember riding in it making the noise's that the rotary made. Now that its mine and I rebuilt her with a fat SP, and gave her new life. I could never sell her. I have had several offers for it. But to me, the sentimentail (spelling) value is way higher than any offer someone could give me. I mean its my girl, If I could make love to it I would!!

My advice to you, Keep It!!! Its a sweet looking FB!

I agree with everone else on the fact that you won't really get what it is truely worth. And it is a very nice car, I would just keep it.

Or you can sell it to me for 50 bucks

Get a new wife!

Just kidding. Like everybody says, try to keep it. But if you do have to sell it make sure it goes to a good home. Don't sell it to a kid that is going to rice it out. Look for somebody that appreciates what you did and wants to keep that way. Good luck!

worth 15 -20k , what you can posibly get is 8-10k. Our cars value is heading up right now it was bottomed a few years ago but thanks to the kids, the parts scrapeyards and the racing community good clean cars are getting fewer and fewer. example 4-5 years ago you could pick up a realy nice 1st gen for about $1500 today that car should go for about 3000 to 4000. verry nice condition cars with far more miles than yours has on it are selling for around 5000. think about it this way if you found today a stock mint condition car with as few miles as yours, say you paid $6,500 found 3 piece wheels same quality, size as yours they would run about 600+ each , tires about 120 each, there are engine builders that still build a equivalant engine, buy that my guess around 5000, get that same body kit(yep it still available) 2700 + install 1000+ paint 2500,take all the rest of your mods todays priceing I am guessing including engine install, tuning,exhuast,supens,elcet,ect,ect...makes another 4000 -5000 add this all up aprox $25000 some could do it for less others could be much higher. it looks to me you can not afford to sell right now. untell barret jackson starts liking coustom rx7s you need to either start enjoying the car or get it in to some mags then back to the deep freeze for another 5-10 years then re check at that time there was a red turbo very much like your car that sold on ebay or yahoo for $11,000 in the last 12 months. mine apprasied for $12,000 before the last tear down for paint, interior mods and turbo swap. good luck with the wife. my wife is behind me on keeping mine, had it(the rx) sence early 80
