What's special about an auto rear end?

apparently they have a slightly different ratio (just hearsay, no hard evidence on that) if there's and easy way to check I'll look at mine, its out of a 84 auto GSL

Less abused than the 5spd model and was told by a reliable source, many many years ago, that the ratios are close to the gsl-se. There's nothing listed in the repair manual nor the racing beat catalog.

The gsl models from 81-85 had LSD rear ends. They are direct bolt in. take one assembly out and put the other in. What part of GA are you from, Im in Valdosta. If close enough you can bring your car and the rear end to my shop and we could knock it out in a day.

peace

Thanks I have a 84 GSL I thought only the GSLSE had the LSD but I am new to the FB just bought it 3 days ago. So if I had the LSD when ever the tires would spin not just the right tire, I know it sound dumb.

LSD, if its in good shape, will make both spin. for a TII you'll need a narrowed ford rear end, or something similar, that GSL will never hold up.

first, in 84 all mazda rear axles became beefier. The only real difference between GSL and GSL-SE ends is the gearing and the brakes. The strength is equal to both units.

The miata reference is the LSD unit itself, not the entire rear end but just the buisness end of the deal will fit in 84-up rear housings. This may take some minor mods but nothing that would be a deterent. What you are getting is a TORSEN style LSD instead of the clutch type we all know and love.

for more information http://www.monmouth.com/~rothe/torsen.html

I have heard from different rotary shops, Hayes being one of them, that the RX-7 rear ends ar good for about 300 hp. I would assume that hard drag launches would compromise the integerty of the rear. you can use a stock rear in your turboed FB. as long as you are not AJC13b.

84/85 Have bigger axels,

GSL/GSLSE differentuals are the same,Just diffrent ring gears,If gearing matters you can buy them from Mazdatrix,

I personally like the 4.444
