Thumbs down What's the dilly with A/C's?

The pic above was stolen from "Gamble302"'s picture gallery, then cropped so that it only shows the relavent parts.

That's my engine bay. Much nastier. I'll fix that when I get a garage. And I'm using Purolator and Wix (CarQuest) filters on everything, so don't bitch about the Fram.

Anywho. Note the A/C lines. Why is his a hard metal line and mine is a rubber hose.

That rubber hose is routed under the hot start motor in the part you can't see and has cut through on the bracket. It's also wearing throgh near the oil filter.

Why is this? Why aren't they all the same? Can I get metal line to put there? I'd like to have a working A/C sometime after getting the car all nice and stuff.

I'm trying to figure that out, too. My 82 had a hose like yours, but a different compressor (6P134A). I also have an 85. It has the metal line like Gamble302's, and the same 10P-something-or-other compressor you and Gamble302 have. I don't know if it's a year-to-year difference, or factory air vs dealer air. The evaporators are also vastly different between my 2 cars.
My theory would be that the compressors are different year-to-year, Gamble302 has factory air, and you have dealer air. If you look closely, you can see a difference between your compressor and Gamble 302's. The lines go in at totally different angles. (guess that blows the compressor theory).

Anyone got the real answer?

BTW, replacement hoses are not too expensive if you take your old one to an AC Supplier who makes hoses in-house.

actually mine doesnt work anymore so i might get rid of it. didnt work when i got it about a month ago. it just needs to be recharged. anyone know how much it would cost to get it recharged? if its outrageously pricey, i might just yank it off and sell it because windows down and top up is fine by me even in the heat of the summer here in south texas.
oh and my names gamble, not gamble302, gamble was taken oddly enough though, not like anyone else is named gamble.

I know the GSL-SE's had a different A/C system than all the others. Mine's got rubberized / metal hardlines, and a different (lighter and smaller) compressor.

I think there's both year-to-year differences, like mine, and factory / OEM differences, cuz I think some of the earlier models had a/c as a dealer installed option (like the pinstriping on mine and the mudflaps)

Gamble,
I've got all the equipment to get your AC going. Shouldn't take more than about $50 or so in parts. Or, I might be interested in buying the pieces from you. I'm old, I can't take the S.Texas heat no more.

A/c, just as everything else in a car is simple when you break it down into basic concepts. I can explain basic A/C theories as I have before th hack if you so like.

Ah. Diareah of the keyboard is a fun thing indeed.

mine had been sitting for a loooong time before i bought it, i figured it had all leaked out. me and my pops go to put the new engine in, disconnected the hose and.....WHHHOOOOOOOSHHH!.... well, at least i know it doesn't have any leaks. and i get a tan soooo much easier with the gaping ozone hole over my house. seriously, i think you need to have it pumped out. if i'd have even thought there was any left in there i would NOT have let that freon loose. the conversion itself is pretty easy and straight forward. change a couple connectors, attach new refrigerant, shake can.... took all of 30 mins to finish. decent instructions come with the kit.
