whats color is "correct"
whats color is "correct"
ok as the hints are out there my SA has received some cosmetic attention
Here is a point where I am kind of stuck, what color are the exterior door handles suppose to be?? The window trim is not black, are they suppose to match the window trim or the mirror which is a graphite color??
not sure if the trim will be clear in this pic

thanks guys

the earlier cars i think started black, but fade to a grey, like your pic. there is actually a different part number for the early/grey door handle, but the trim around the windows superceeds

So do I follow you correctly, handles same color as trim in your opinion?

although a new grey part is really dark
ok, what color is your 78? (the car itself)
at worse I'll have the trim color matched and do the handles
what gets me is all the other 78/79's locally have black trim and handles and the couple of pics I can find of Daytona Blue cars are also black so I am not catching a ryhme or reason. Once I re assemble the car I can focus back on getting the dang weber dialed in

They can be any color you want. But if your asking how they came from the factory, they should match the door trim which was that graphite grey you mentioned. The 79 mirrors were also a close matching grey plastic.
I've never been able to find an actual factory color code for the trim, But I did find excellent color match to my original trim color. It has no actual name, just came out out of a Sikkens color map book called Metallic colors, page 351, code H-3.
In 1980 the trim and mirrors were more black. Actually, I'd bet slight variance's occured throughout production making an exact all or nothing right and wrong answer impossibile. But in 79, overall trim and door handles were metallic grey, not black.

I've heard the suggestion of doing them blue
dang Mazda, I have choopacobra's 3/78 Spark yellow at my place and all the trim is black ... sigh ... and he purchased it from the original owner ...

I remember that thread going around, suggesting that the Spark cars (and maybe Daytona ones) had the black trim instead of the grey. Honestly, back in the day I never specifically compared the trim colors of the cars to one another looking for differences.
But at the time, this Rx-7 rabid teenager did not notice any glaring differences in it either. I spent several Sunday afternoons that summer of 79 at dealers lots, rubbing up and down on new Rx-7's. Spark cars were a little rarer than White, Red and Bronze ones with the Daytona cars being very few and far inbetween. I'd swear on a stack of rotors that the trim color was the same for all cars. My Sunrise Red one came with the trim in my previous post.

If I would have been paying attention back then it would have helped but am guilty of driving Chevelles back then lol
Oh for the record the black car is mine shortly after I got it, then went blue over a year ago (that failed). My avatar is a hint of what she looks after her trip to the beauty parlor on 1/21/2012

lol you been talking to choop?
you know hot pink would pop
I know it's not factory paint but there is no reason not to have it looking correct.
This then leaves me the option to pull off the Enkies and throw on the waffles and
if so inclined pull the keg and swap in the thermal reactor engine. My car will be
like a transformer lol

To follow up, this 79 mirror is mint as aftermarket baby tornado's were one of the first things I installed after buying my car. The darker mirror and trim came off a low mile 80 and shows the differences. In reality, the general purpose trim paint found at most autopart stores can produce a good, affordable representation of either color.
Finially, my Toronado's. I got the Turbo style which were different. They came in two sizes, these smaller ones were called baby toronado's. Period speed gear.
