What would you do?

I have an interesting problem with an '85 GSL-SE 5 speed. A guy I work with picked up this car for dirt cheap. He just finished practically restoring an '87 GXL, and he let me have the car for some work I did for him. Now comes the interesting part. I towed the car home, threw a battery in it, and after sitting for a few years, it fired right up!!! The down side of the car is, it needs a passenger's fender, and more than likely a door. The front windsheild is severly cracked, and it needs new tires. The master cylinder is also bad, and rear brake lines look rusty. The car has little to no surface rust, but on the inside of the car, above the wheel-well it is rusted through. The interior is fair with only one rip between bot of the seats, and the inside driver's door latch is broken. there are a few more little thinks here and there, but not bad for a 17 year old import. I orginally planned to just sell it as it sits, but then I witnessed a beautiful '84 sell on Ebay for $600.00 and I realized I wouldn't get much for mine. My car only has 110,000 miles on it and when I drove it, I was suprised. Those 135Hp pull this car off the line quick! I hate to let this car go for nothing, when I know it has potential. I also have an '86 MR2 that needs the headgasket replaced, and I don't know which car to try and salvage. Should I try and keep my eye open for a good bodied/bad motor Rx7, or are they worth the hassle? I'd appreciate anyone's opinion on these cars. Also, do they feel safe and smooth at high speeds? Thanks!!!

Yeah I should have expected that. I know what I have when it comes to Mister 2. Now much power, fun in the twisties and not worth a whole lot. I'm wondering what I should expect from the Rx7. Are the GSL-SE's worth much? I know off the line they seem to hold their own, but do they have much of a top-end? Is it worth the time and money to restore it? Thanks for the offer of replacing my headgasket, but I think I can pull it off (I've did to Tbird SC's in the last 3 months). And one more all important question, how does the 13b motor respond to mods? I read in the archives, about doing the exhaust which has to help eliminating 3 cats. How hard is it to make one a respectible 14 sec. car? Thanks again for any info!!!

I think youll like the RX-7 better, its power balanced better (overpowered) than the MR2. A GSL-SE is the premier car that all of us want to get our hands on, not many for sale these days.... I have seen go for as much as 6K. 13B as with all rotaries responds well to mods, but remember, anything that gets money thrown at it responds well, ask my wife. As far as a 14sec car, well hope your savings account is deep, and thats just not for an RX-7 thats for any car......

Have fun, and my offer still stands.

If you don't love the 7 or don't ever see yourself keeping it for a long-long time. It sounds like a big head-ache. But you have is something alot of us on this forum would die for. A zero dollars out of pocket GSL-SE, just begging for a full restore, or better yet, a full performance built. Oh I can see it now, turbo, FMIC, brakes, suspension, roll bar, Honda head lights in the rea-view.

You need to try finding a first gen that is modded and drive it, then you might appriciate why we are all here. And if you decide to get rid of it, you now know where to go.
