Talking what would you do with a 12.a rotary ? Some idea's would be alright

Hello all ... I have fallen inlove,, deeply with the rx-7. Sounds like a mushy novel hey? I was wondering if I could get some ideas on setups? The Bolt ons I would need, ect.. I blew my 13b bad mechanic, me = mad. however I have found a decent 12 a fg 1985 gsl grey that I now own as well.. two frames one runs. I have a ton of web sites I can go to.. I was just hoping someone could tell me there best experiances with the 12 a and how it was set up... keep in mind I'm a newbie the other rx-7 I bought was already set up, and hooked up with things I cant began to pernounce let alone spell. It was really nice too. I miss it. the 12 a that I have now is pretty spunky, handles very well. I can turn them in 1st no problem, chirped in second, and well once I think I chirped in third,, but it was probably my imagination. I think I may have a few issues,, but i'll see if any of this rings a bell. sometimes when I really get on it,, cause I like to, it will hesitate until I let up off the gas, then when I get the pedel back down, it acts like nothing happend before just as mean as always.. by the way did I mention i really like this car.. huge potential,, but no clue where to begin.. I have installed a raven exhaust muffler on it,, welded on,, and adjusted the fuel and idle speed of the carb so it sets about 8.5.. Next thing is the air conditioner really drags out the motor,, it revs to 1000, then falls to 8.5-9,, then revs to 1000,, really anoying at times.. but the air is ice cold so who am I to complain., Ideas about setups, fixes, all the cool stuff Is really apreciated thank you all so much... Khaine again thanx

first off welcome to the forum

I would rip off the emissions , get a header and exhaust, direct fire setup, rip out the ac if you want performance.

the hesatation souds like a lack of fuel due to the "all wonderful nikki carb" . try to richen the mixture a little and check out sterlings thread "nikki mods" .

check out my page to see what I have done http://members.cardomain.com/dwilliamsfaq

my favorite setup for a 12a car is:
get the racing beat street port system
get a lighter flywheel (i like the steel rb one)
remove the rear sway bar
get tokiko blues
and thats it. you end up with a very balanced car that is not super fast but is a lot of fun to drive.
i have never done it but i would probably add the dlifis, and maybe some bushings, a steering wheel.
if the ac works you should keep it, its hot outside. i also like to leave the somg stuff on the car, we have emissions testing here, and swapping exhausts is no biggie, but swapping all that crap is too much work

This hesitation you are talking about, is it just when you are first getting on the throttle coming off of idle or at other times. I have a hesitation sometimes coming off of idle and if I let up real quick and then step on the gas again it's fine too. For me, it is because the carb is set a little too rich at idle and it is actually sorta flooding a bit real quick. Unfortunately if I lean mine out too much more, it starts to idle like complete crap, so I just deal with it for now. I'll eventually tweak it better.

The hesitation is like wot, shifting from 1st to second or second to 3rd. at idle it's alright,, at normal operation it's alright..however when my foot gets heavy,, (next to a triton or cobra) it'll bog, hesitate, if I let off and do a roll start I'm looking at them in the mirrors. does that help?

RB exhaust, Camden Supercharger, MSD Ignition, open element air canister, electric fan. This is where I'm heading with my car.

i'd get an exhaust system (RB streetport system) and do away with the emissions crap!!!

get some hotter coils (MSD Blaster 2) and good a set of wires
get a decent fuel pump
tune up the engine
rebuild the Nikki
get the lightweight flywheel and a nice streetable clutch
get a Gen II oil cooler

then turn to the suspension ... polyurethane everything and get whatever hard parts that suit your driving style (springs, struts/shocks and sway bars)

Your car is goning to be P.H.A.T. when you finish it. It really looks good. Let me know when you complete it,, I'd like to see the pics

RotorMotorDriver
looks like it's well ballanced,, audio, and performance..

Thank you all for the idea's.. I'm getting on it right now.

by the way... with the small problems I have,, and only a different muffler, just for the sound (raven exhaust) I killed a camero,, factory, not ss... It just made me feel good..=8c)~

I'm a newbie with engines, especially rotarys, so could someone explain just what to expect in power increase with better coils?

You're in Kentucky right? Not too far from you there is the dark side of the force..

...the force is strong with this one..

-Mike-P-28 can show you the dark side of the force, known as TURBO BOOST.

In a few weeks, I am sure he can take you for a ride in his Money Pit, and blow the **** out of that Hemi Cuda.

Then you can say, it "only has a few bolt ons..."

insert Diabolica laughter here..

You figured out what Pump and injectors finally? What did you finally settle on?
I got my Haltech in on Friday, and looked it all over, I get My Turbo today (hopefully), it's been ready for 3 weeks. I have to go about 90 miles to get it, so I have been lazy.

I will build the exhaust manifold once I put the engine in the car, as I have some wierd ideas about the placement of the turbo. The Wastegate location will dictate alot of what I can and can't do based on it's sheer size.

At least the E-Fan can be controlled by the Haltech, so you will have much more control to it.

Hey, you're an electronics Wiz - (question coming...)
How would I be able to modify my fan to run at two speeds? Like a Low and a High? That way I could control it more carefully.

Also, I don't know if your're a member, but have you looked into the Yahoo Group: TURBO FB?

I think what they are trying to say is trade the 12a in for a 13b turbo and spend most of your free time under the hood trying desperately to find more ways to spend money!

My solution is header/exhaust, modify the carb and add a K&N air filter. When the next rebuild is due, have the engine ported and add a few mods such as ignition and fuel pump with possible a better carb. Dump the air pump and AC. Its still a genuine Gen 1 rather than a mongrel RX7/Cosmo/Luce who never met its father!

Only if your happy with about 160Hp MAX personally I was not, when I added headers to my 12A, i dint notce hardly any difference, so id say change the carb and then the exhaust.. or both at the same time..

My fuel pump Im deciding on the Walbro (I can get one cheap here in the states) and the Bosch from RPM centre, probally gonna go with the Bosch, the injectors will be 1500cc (143lbs/hr).. The downpipe I see that RB makes one, but its only a 2 1/2 I need a 3" Tim said he could make me one, but I bet the shipping will be bad on 2 pieces 1/2 plate steel flanges and about 3 feet of bent 3" pipe

You just love doing that dontcha, showing me a wastegate that costs more than my car payment , grocery bill, phone bill and mortage combined!

On the fan I assume you use a resistor, but where the **** can you find one that big! The biggest one I have it a 15W one, and it measures 1X1X8 Its huge!!!

Mike you will be able to write a three volume book on your project endorsed by your bank manager!

I agree car rebuilding is a great hobby but I am slowly coming to the view I want a genuine gen 1, not a hybrid. As long as I can beat my daughter's boyfriend in his new Honda convertible I am happy. Thus a mid 14s car is OK for my daily driver and I still get 26-28 mpg.

Racing Beat sells a 3" down pipe for $125. They sell it as a componet of their complete 3" system for use in custom applications, like your's and mine.

I would guess it is expensive to ship. Many guys use an aftermarket TII downpipe, cut it in the middle, and rotate one half of, 180 degrees. Seems to work on many a turbo first gen over here (though usually with the TII manifold and Turbo)

Aww Come on, don't exaggerate, you have my Excel sheet breaking it all down. The wastegate isn't cheap, but if is more than all your bills combined, - then I need to see your financial planner! He must be Good!

1x1x8 - Inches? I am kinda lost on this one. I was wondering if I could route the power to the fan through some kind of stepper switch (low, med, & High) Kinda like an A/C Fan switch.. Ideas?

My goal is to have the Haltech keep it at Full power when it needs it, but to have a 2nd Thermostat switch that is "always On" to blow the fan at half speed when the car is shut off, until it cools off enough.

Kinda like the 3rd Gen Fan Mod

Is this what you're referring to?
3 Inch Flange

Because that's not a down-pipe.

Or are you referring to

Turbo II downpipe
Because that one is 2.5 Inches, not 3".

Now if you meant this one:

3 Inch Down Pipe for RB exhaust system.

They will only bolt on a TII with the RB Exhaust system.

In other words - Lots of Custom Fabricating to make it fit. After all that, you might as well have the muffler shop make it along with the rest of the exhaust. Its $125 for that piece alone.

Now, if you were talking about a whole different one:

I dunno how to get the Haltech to do 2 speeds, but I know how to do it with a rehostatic switch such as a blower fan switch in a regular car. Your on your own for that 1

So which one do I need to get guys, you all know I have a 91 turbo, well as far as turbos go (the exit of the turbo stock is 2 1/8 , well mine is now 2 1/2" thanks to Bryan at BNR and the P trim in there lol

I wanna get these parts soon, I wanna hear vroooooooooom woooooooooosh vrooooooooooom schreeeeeeeeeeech (cop sirens) oh ****, vroooooooooooom woooooooooooosh vrooooooooom

the fd's use a dual speed fan setup. find an online fsm, and see how it works. the rb 3" system is totally unique, my muffler shop didnt have a flange the would work. you would have to buy all the parts from rb.
