Since my latest round of fluid changes, my stance on this subject now stands as this:

For trannys with grinding synchros, 50/50 mix with gear lube/ATF

For those without shifting issues, Lucas Gear Oil

I'm running straight Lucas now that I no longer have the grinding issue, and performance seems to be holding. So far, no issues and great shifting.

Anyone ever tried D4 ATF from redline?
Even after trying the expensive Idemitsu, I'm debating on going to straight ATF and if you look up the D4 it looks to be what everyone should be running. It looks to be 'the answer'.

I have been running royal purple and 98% of the time its great and then every once in a while it just doesn't want to shift. the last time we put fluid in the tranny it was on the lift at Rp performance and I think they use Motul and what ever it was it didnt hold up well, after 2 days of scca school it was shifting like crap with the 2/3 shift and the 3/2 shift to the point i started just using 3 and 4 to make sure i made it thru the 3rd day of school.

I think I'm going to stick with the Idemistsu for a while.
I'm happy after driving this morning.

I've been using Sta-Lube GL-4 85w90 for the last few months in a rebuilt tranny. Once the fluid warms up it shifts good, nothing great but shifts are smooth and confident. Haven't grinded any gears. When fluid is cold, shifts are slower and notchy. Drove around for a few hours in the hills and it worked just fine. As the fluid got hot the shifts were real nice and quick.

Not a bad fluid for the buck and it's brass synchro friendly. $32 a gallon. You can buy it at NAPA, Amazon.com and ACE Hardware too.

I've been using Red Line MT-90 for about 2k miles (switched to it after breaking in the rebuilt transmission) it's been working well for me. A little notchy when cold but warms and becomes nice and smooth. It also responds well to quicker shifting.

I'm telling you guys a lot of raceteams use Redline for a reason. It's amazing. If you want the great stuff run blue shockproof, it's still only $12 a quart. $25 is not that much money for piece of mind.

I'm using Valvoline in the tranny and it feels very good in my car. I can't speak for any of the others, but good ol' Valvoline feels just great for me.

To date, how has the MT-90 experience been? I run this on my RX8 and have been happy overall with the performance. I updated to MT-LV per the most recent recommendation on the rx8 forum but realized it's too thin compared to MT-90. I am currently using the Valvoline 75w-90 on both the tranny and diff. It works ok but feel the shifting could be better. The diff was chattery so I had to add the LSD additive since my 1983 rx7 is the GSL with LSD.

GM Syncromesh has been better for my dying 2nd gear synchro (3rd gear on my last transmission) than MT-90 or Royal Purple.
Pennzoil Syncromesh is a cheaper substitute that has been working just as well.

GM synchromesh has always been the one gear oil that recieves positive results on all forums as it was recommended on my DSM when I owned it. I like the idea of Pennzoil since it's inexpensive. I really do not want to use Redline unless it's actually needed since 2 quarts runs like $50+ the last time I checked.

Anyone here ever do the famous MT-90 and MTL mocktail mix that many people across different car forums have used? I used to do this on my AWD DSM and had really good results. I am wondering if the 1st gen tranny would benefit from this. I am currently running the Valvoline 75w-90 Synthetic and am not impressed on the shifting smoothness. This is after I replaced the master, slave cylinder, and bled the clutch thinking it was the issue since the parts were the original one's that came with the car.

Redline MT-90 and MTL mocktail in 1st gen tranny

I guess I will be the first -lol. I called my local auto parts store and was suprised when they said they had it in stock. I’ll be changing out the fluid tomorrow. I’ll keep you guys posted on the differences I notice. 😁👍

Hi guys, so here are my results from driving it on my 1 hour commute today along with a few short back and forth runs during the weekend. It fixed my 5th to 4th year downshift issue I was having. For some reason, whenever I would try to shift from 5th to 4th on the freeway - I would get a dead spot where it would not allow me to get into gear regardless of how smooth or slow I engaged it. I would always have to wait a few seconds and then it would allow the engagement. My whole commute I kept purposely shifting from 4th to 5th and down to 4th over and over to see if I experienced this issue. I did not experience it a single time and am very happy with the results. In regards to shifting into every other gear it seems it did get better as the engagement and transition is smoother. With this being a thinner oil, there has not been any gear grinding or shuddering. I will continue to report back any new results but so far so good just as I expected. Again, I have ran this in the past on previous vehicles with the same good results just like many others mention on the numerous car forums.
