What tranny do I have?
Ok, I tried to install a new tranny mount in my '83, as it has only a rubber washer between the tranny and crossmember. I bought a tranny mount that is supposed to fit the car, an 83 GS 5 speed. However, the mount would not fit, as the bottom of the transmission has a closer bolt pattern than the mount has. I know the trans has been swapped, due to the shifter being about 1-1.5 inches farther back than it should be. The shifter tower hits the back of the hole in the floor, even though it has been lenghtened a little, via the BFH method.
I have determined that I will likely have to make something fit, which is not a problem. The problem is, I don't know what the tranny is.
Here is a brief description, based on what I could see.
The shifter sits about 1-1.5 inches farther rearward than stock.
The overall length seems to be the same as stock.
The case is not smooth, it has a ribbed case.
It appears to fit the 12a perfectly at the bellhousing.
Any idea as to what tranny I have in this car?
I have a feeling it is a later model, but I have no clue as to what it originally fit.
4K in 5th = 75-80MPH w/ 205/50-15, is this close to the stock ratio? Of course, this is assuming the tach and speedo are somewhat close to accurate.

I hate you!
Anyone have a pic (or a link to a pic) of a T2 tranny? I would like to have a visual, for comparison. If this is indeed a T2 tranny, I would likely need to do further investigating, in the event that I ever need to replace the clutch or starter.
From what I have seen, these appear to be different between a stock 1st gen, and the T2.
I tried looking in the archive, but all threads relating to a T2 tranny swap seem to have lost the images that were once attached. This is where I seen the info about the clutch/flywheel/starter differences.
Thanks.

Bump.
Anyone got pics, so I can tell which tranny this is?
Also, would it be possible for me to drill a couple new holes on the mounting location, so I can use the stock 1st gen mount? That is what I am currently contemplating.
While I may have gotten a killer deal when I purchased this car, it has a downside. I purchased it at an impound auction, which makes contacting any former owners quite difficult. Also makes me have to become a "detective" of sorts, to determine what has previously been done to the car.

The older 5 speeds looked alot like the TII tranny they both have ribbed cases and I know the early ones had a bolt on aluminum pan on them and I pretty sure the TII had the same ribbed cast aluminum pan as the early units. I had a 1974 RX3 with a 1976 RX3SP 5 speed in it that I got the tranny as a basket case.
