My 84 will start with starting fluid, and will even run for about a mile maybe, after which it starts to faulter down and die, as if it is not getting enough gas to the carb. I also have some rpm gauge "blip", and some spark detonation between the coil lead and the coil body. Does this sound like an igniter problem? And what are the symptoms of bad igniters? possibley your igniters.. i would check the coils too.

 

When I broke a distributor rotor. the tach would bounce and the coil will arc. Try replacing your cap and rotor. they arnt that expensive.

 

If you have a haynes manual there is a very easy test to check if the igniter is bad. Its a small circuit that you set up, just need a couple wires to do it. My rx had a bad trailing igniter, it would start, but run VERY weak, never tryed to drive it like this. Replaced the igniter, and now it wont start, it tries, but doesnt Still dont know exactly what is wrong with mine..... But you should defiantly check the igniter.

 

If there is a spark on your coil like that I would try changing that first. Sign of a bad coil.
