What is this switch for?

My son's new/used '81 RX-7. I The wiring is a mess. I was wondering what this switch is for?

Throttle Position Sensor, aka TPS. Normally, there's a bent metal bracket which mounts this in position that the plunger presses against a cam. As the throttle is increased, the cam pushing on the plunger, telling the ECU where the throttle is expected to be.

Thanks for that. Is it needed? A bunch of the emission stuff has been removed. It has a racing beat intake manifold and a holley carb, if that matters.

the TPS basically runs the vacuum advance solenoids, shutter and air control valves, so if you don't have those, then you don't need the TPS.
