im putting a used 12a in my 83 rx7. what should i do to the engine to make it more reliable? and would a new carburator be a good idea?

 

get the carb rebuilt?

but do the rats nest removal and the ignition mod with all the letters in it

and clean the engine bay.

 

 

You could degrease the engine and paint it. Clean engines run cooler. And definately clean the engine bay. That wont help the motor but it'll look sharp. While the engine is out you can also do any repairs or upgrades to the steering and suspension.

 

Either buy a new carb, get your carb rebuilt, or send it off to get modded by Sterling or Yaw. 12a's are really reliable engines so long as you keep up on maintanence, let it warm up properly and cool down properly.

I agree with ZeikHunter as well. Remove all the emisions, do the ignition upgrade, do exhaust. Those three upgrades alone will render good power gains as well.
