Question What RX7 have I bought?

Hi guys...

Bought a 1985 first gen RX7 today. Now, I'm not sure what spec or even engine is in it and I need to satisfy my couriosity

It has 14in alloys, brown interior and is exactly the same as the one in the following link (except not as mint!):

http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C08435

Also, any further info would be great. I plan to use this as a track car so any useful tuning tips (and where I can get mods) would also be mucho appreciated!

Many Thanks in Advance

Coog

Those look like GSL-SE wheels on a 12A equipped rx7?!?!?! Maybe thats how they do things in Ireland.

You have an FB as I'm sure you know. May I humbly suggest you download the factory service manual, it's here: http://www.wankel.net/~krwright/cars/rx7/85_manual.html It's saved my butt a few times.

And welcome to the Wankel family.

Onlyonthurs, I wanted to say it was a GSL-SE, due to the rims, but when I saw the motor, I assumed it was another trim.

But, then what do I know? I've been working on my engine for the past three days I can't think straight.

Yes, the wheels confused me too. BTW this is not my actual car, but mine is exactly the same. Same wheels and same engine.

At least now I know its a 12A, spec wise I havent a clue though lol...

Thanks very much for the warm welcome, and that manual will be a god send no doubt!!!

Cheers

IIRC, GSL-SE had the latter bolt pattern, the other trim models the former.

WOW..WOW...WOW...
you have bought yourself a classic at it's finest!
With alot of dealer add-ons.
Lookz like a 83 Savanna Rx-7.
In japan they used the 4x114.3 on their turbo 12a, so yes that bolt pattern was used before as we know as the GSL-SE.

VERY nice find...and welcome to the community.

No, YOU have a hard time reading. He stated that the car in the link is just like his except for the color of the interior and not as mint:

Mr. Coog, (I assume that's an Irish name), could you post pictures of your actual car? If it looks like that, you are lucky. If it's a bit more tattered it might be interesting too.

Easy way to settle this. If the wheels are the same and you have a fuel injected engine, you have a GSL-SE. If you have the same wheels but a carbureted engine, it's possible that you have a GSL-SE with a swapped engine or a lower trim level with swapped suspension. Post pictures of the actual car and we can help you out

Gentlemen, you're not thinking globaly. North America got the FI 13B, the rest of the world didn't. Japan got the 12AT while Europe got the 6-port 12A. The original poster is from N. Ireland, so he would have an SE body with the 12A engine.

thats correct. i was interested to know what the color name was on the car for sale and i was indicating that i did in fact like the color. ithen asked Coog what the color of his car was. perhaps i should have suggested that he post pics of his car.

-note the old interior facia and different door panels. this was retained for european rx-7's in the 84-85 model years. the steering wheel, shift ****, seats, and wheels were all oem. iirc, as a note if the engine were the six port 12A then the air cleaner assembly would be black instead of blue. i can post a pic if need be.

Original Mark 3 or Series 3 cars sold in the UK had those Wheels, and looked as pictured. Those options you see happened to be the options what were specified to Toyo Kogyo later Mazda Japan by the UK dealer distribution scheme. The trim levels many people refer to are merely North American package groups of popular options. All models can have options mixed and retrofitted to any other package RX-7. Therefore the S, GS, GSL designations are are less significant than the attention they receive. The only major distinct trim level is the 13B EFI engine GSLSE, but even that can be retrofitted, 12A to 13B and 13B to 12A. In 22 + years it is not uncommon for options to be switched, for one reason or another. For £4250 that is a nice car in the Picture.

OK, think theres been a wee bit of confusion. Thats not my car, but mine has same wheels and engine but a different interior... It has full electrics, air con and I believe it has cruise control (or had but it doesn't work anymore).

Anyway, today I had a chance & took the following pics (sorry about the size!)

I think you'll agree, its not quite as mint as the one above lol also, you may notice the lack of beltage under the bonnet

Kinda snapped them today at the track. The belt going to the air pump pretty much fell off after revving above 4k, the alternator belt snapped after about my 30th lap (c. 1.5 miles)

Ive searched here and discovered that the airpump isn't really required, only for emissions? Anyway, I took the belt out completely and about 5 laps later the coolant pipe running to the passengers side of the engine split (think this may come from the heater matrix but not sure), I doubt these are connected, so I thought this may just be co-incidental (but thought I'd ask anyway)?

Also, I need a new alternator belt. I'm not even sure where to start to look to get a new one of these, any ideas? When it snapped all the lights on the dash came on too inc the fogs, battery, coolant level, etc etc but the car ran exactly the same. Kinda worrying but I was hoping it was just the warning for an alternator belt failure lol

Sorry for such a long and complicated post BTW... this is the only place I can ask advice... there was alot of people standing round the car today scratching heads and asking questions and quite a few comments about removing the air pump belt and thats how I blew the coolant hose

Coog sorry to hear your 1st run at the track was kind of a blow out. This is a great place to ask questions and get help you need. We love to help fellow 7 owners. you may want to check the Europe forum section and try and find a club in your area.

Pretty car, will be real nice with a little cleaning. And yeah that sure is a strange combination you have there, it looks like a pre-84/85 model with SE wheels and a 12A motor from an 84/85. Either Trochoid is right, we Americans are too provincial and incapable of thinking "globally" or else some one upgraded an earlier 12A suspension using SE parts. Either way, nice find!

Wow. I like that wing on the back of your car. Interior is nice, can't really same much for the engine bay. tho.

Still, nice find. And yes, the air pump is meant for emissions. If you're not concerned over emissions, check out the FAQ for rats nest removal and other things. Don't forget to check out the FSM for your car.

And, think about upgrading your beehive oil cooler.
