I know that posi is a generic term for a LSD now days but wasn't it specific to a certain car maker like GM or Chrysler(can't remember).

Posi IS the same, nowdays as LSD. Back in the day the LSD was just that, limited slip. One side would slip before the other caught. Also known to some I think as a cone or clutch rear. All of this info comes from GM in the 60's. I think now the comparison to then might be what they are calling an open rear? Hell, so much has changed in the terminology it is hard to keep up with. I seem to be stuck with the OLD deffinitions and alot of the guys misinturpret. more info on what used to B can be found at http://www.442.com/oldsfaq/ofdif.htm

Posi/Positraction is a Chevrolet tade name for a clutch-type limted slip. Not all LSD's are Posi but all Posi's are LSD's.

One of my big gripes.

I had a friend who thought "Posi" meant a limited slip diff but "limited slip" meant traction control. I didn't realize this until we were having a damn-we're-15-and-can't-wait-until-we-can-drive BS session and I said that for sure he'd have a limited slip, and he said that he didn't want limited slip, but he did want a Posi. I was all WTF for a moment and then proceeded to explain...

Yes, I've been a gar geek for as far back as I can remember. My mom says it's her fault, from all the toy cars she got me since I was real little, combined with the fact that she taught me how to read before I was 2...
