Question What is the nipple.....

What is the nipple on the side of the oil fill tube for? I just purchased my first rx7 (83 gsl) a few weeks ago. I'm a rotary newb. I've determined that the previous owner was a moron, hehe. Anyway is the nipple for pcv operation or what? I have a couple vaccuum hoses that are just loose and plugged. It has an edelbrock carb so i really don't know what the stock setup is like. Some things are ghetto rigged (zip ties etc.) It doesn't run that great right now. It's really loud and slow. It does chirp the tires on the 1-2 shift though . There is no cat, 2.5" piping, possibly an aftermarket header, and dynomax muffler. The rx7 starts easily now that i cleaned the plugs and connected the distributor wires correctly(they were wrong when i bought it, doh!). Oh yeah, is the oil metering supposed to drop into the primary barrels of the carb? Sorry for all the newb questions, thanks for reading.

I think the OMP drops somewhere into the carb, I'm not 100% sure mine's working so I just use premix in mine (2 cycle oil in the gas) on my '80 race car.

The nipple I think (if it's anything like my TurboII) is for overflow or something.. or venting.. I really don't know for sure.. as I remember it's blocked off on my race car though.. I THINK.. and it's connected to a cluster of crap on the TurboII.. don't know what for.. but on my '80 race car I'm PRETTY sure it is just plugged up.

You're right - it's part of the PCV system. It needs to be connected to an air source in order to properly ventilate condensation from the oil. If it isn't working properly, you'll know because you'll see a buildup of slimy condensation inside the oil filler tube. Over time, this will rust out the inside of the tube, so it should not be left like that for long.

There are 3 ways of setting it up properly:

1) Keep the stock emissions/PCV system completely intact. This is impossible once you ditch the stock carb though.

2) Run a hose from the nipple to the air filter. The problem with this is your air filter gets dirty faster because of all the oily **** that runs through there.

3) Attach a small 'breather' filter to the oil filler nipple. This is how I did it - and it works awesome, no condensation.

Edelbrock carb?! You sure it isn't a Holley? That's really weird, never heard of one of those on an RX-7. That's probably why it doesn't run that good lol.

I'm assuming you have no predrilled place on the carb to route the OMP lines to. In that case, you *must* premix 2-stroke oil in with the gas. This is imperative to your rotary engine not blowing up lol. Very very important.

For you to hook up the OMP to your carb, not only do you need to connect the lines somehow, you need to fabricate a mechanism connected to the throttle to actuate the arm that moves the OMP up and down. Definitely start premixing until you have this figured out. Incidentally, if it's too much trouble hooking it up, I would be tempted not to worry about it and just keep premixing.

Thanks for all the info! Like i said the car is pretty ghetto. It definitely has an edelbrock carb, and it's realtively new and very clean. The stock omp has been disabled, and two lines have been rigged to meter oil into the primaries. I know that they are feeding oil but I don't know if it varies with throttle level at all. I'll premix just to be safe.
Right now the nipple is just open, but I'll definitely get a breather like you said. Thanks again.
