What is my SE?

I picked this up last year, It is completely loaded (cruise, power mirrors, door key hole lights up, leather, etc.) and it has a "targa 7" roof band and all the S.S. panels on the rocker panels...What option was this? I've never seen the Stainless on the bottom before, only the roof bands...Does anybody know if these panels are glued/taped/bolted on? Also, don't all GSL-SE have these wheels? I just bought a parts car (another '84 GSL-SE) and it has the "phone dial" looking wheels I've only ever seen on early 2nd gens. ALL knowledgeable answers appreciated! Thanks guys!

The SS band on the bottom I have seen on 2nd gens maybe a 1st here or there but I know the 2nd gens had them. The dial wheels came of a 2nd gen who ever sold you the car probably wanted the SE wheels they have the same bolt pattern.

I know SE's and 4 lug 2nd gen cars share the same bolt pattern. Maybe someone swapped them on your parts car?

As far as the stainless, maybe it's part of the targa option, or available with it? It seems like something you would get with a special dealer or seasonal promotion.

one of the se's i had that had the targa also had the stainless rocker covers, pretty sure they were screwed/bolted on. the first few years of 2nd gen non turbo cars were 4 lug, thats where your dial wheels are from.

everything on that car is a factory option, down to the stainless rocker mouldings. second gen base models were the ONLY FC to have 4 lug hubs and wheels. they were the aformentioned "phone dial" wheels and are interchangeable with the GSL-SE. you'll need to post more pics. for uh.........research purposes... yeah, research purposes

I, together with several friends, have bought, owned and sold 1st gen RX-7s since the early 1980s, rebuilt numerous wrecked ones back in the day, and must have seen hundreds of them. The stainless "Targa" bands on the roof were definitely an aftermarket item, though some may have been installed by a dealer somewhere. I have never seen a car with the stainless panels on the lower body, and I find it very hard to believe they came from Mazda. I would assume they are glued on.

not to contradict what you said, but the IMSA package included the stainless steel targa band:

and also note that rocker mouldings are available as an option, though the brochure doesnt specifically state the exact description of the mouldings.

Well, all this is good to know...Does the stainless make my SE more desirable? It still has factory paint and needs a new paint job BAD. Should I expect to pay much less for a paint job since ~half the car is stainless? I wish...
