What muffler should I get?

I am shopping for a new muffler, I have a Plimaflow... but it sounds kind of weird now... it sounds like its clogging up or something... which muffler is the most free flowing? Any suggestions will be appreciated, thank you.

AND

Is it worth it to get a straight pipe? Or just a high flow cat? I don't mind how loud the car is... I am running header/racepipe/catback on my Mazda3 so I don't mind the noise level. I have a high flow cat on the FB... and I wanna change it to something more free flowing...

Thanks!

If you don't mind the noise, nothing wrong with a straight pipe. I've noticed the 7's are a bit louder than your average piston motor though when on a straight pipe.

I know I plan on going with a racingbeat presilencer on mine.

Don't get the RB muffler, too exspensive, but I got mine for free. I would go With a borla, I hear they have great sound, stand the heat of the rotary, and improve performance.

Hmm, borla's website doesn't seem to have a part number for the '85 GS and their universal mufflers look to run about the same as I'd pay for the power pulse muffler from RB.

ok, so.. a rotary is alot louder than a piston engine, an uncorked rotary is insanely loud, i could hear my friend from 10 miles away, and he had a RB presilencer. im not even over exagerating. if your exhaust is completetly stock other than the muffler, you can just replace it with anything and it wont be too aweful loud. i would not get a high flow cat, i would just get a test pipe. and a borla or magnaflow, they are the best quality aftermarket mufflers you can get, next to RB.

here is a fart can on my car. it is a straight pipe frokm the header. its not that loud. this also shows that kentetsu can vouch for how quiet it is. although no where near as quiet as his(full RB) so a fart can isnt bad with the stock exhaust, because the manifolf will absorb alot of the noise.

Check RX7.com. They sell the Bonez high flow cat and cat-back muffler. They also have a cat eliminator pipe. These are all bolt up replacements for the stock stuff. I'm going to do the cat or cat replacement pipe- not sure which, yet. And, not sure which muffler.

Other popular mufflers are Racing Beat, Borla, and Magnaflow. I don't think anyone besides Bonez, Racing Beat and Monza/Pacesetter make a bolt up replacement. Most posts I've read don't think highly of Monza...

Defakto, If you search on google, you'll find them. I heard the Borla pro xs is good, all stainless airplane quality steel. You can get them on ebay for like 80$ including shipping from what I last remeber. These aren't direct fits, they're universal for us. So you will have to weld

Well, I have RB Header/High Flow Cat/Plimaflow Muffler on my FB now... it sounds like it's clogging up or something... so I think I will go with the pre silencer and a Borla muffler. I just had a talk with my bro and that's what recommend those to me... since he's on this forum longer than I have and know a lot more than I do.

i would imagine that its the clog in the cat, and not the muffler. i would just replace the cat, and see if it fixes your problem. then i would worry about your muffler. the primaflow is a good muffler.

Ok, sounds good. I will try out the presilencer first and see if there's any more clogging up sound.

If the presilencer doesn't solve your problem, go with a 18" long body magnaflow in the back. Center in and dual out or single offset out if you can. That will be the quietest possible. Don't wanna bash the borla lovers, but they are overpriced. Magnaflow is just as good for a better price, and they have more selection for sizes and in/outlet styles. Just a better value overall IMO.

Good luck with it.

i just got my Apex'I world sport muffler from super autobacs and it sounds great. i temporarily(sp) piped it to the rotting exhaust pipes of 1985 just to see how it sounds. but i am now in the process of fabricating my entire exhaust system from scratch.

That looks pretty good. More pics would be nice. Is that SS packed or fiberglass? Also, what are the tip dimensions?
