Its mainly an insulation for road noise reduction.

I think it reduces vibration of the body so it makes less noise. Kinda like putting Duct tape on a drum head. I doubt it insulates much from heat, but i suppose it could some.

If it got all that hot, it'd goo up and soakthrough the carpet... I don't think it's for much heat insulation at all... I think the heat shield is for that, and even then, if the car's moving, it shouldn't matter as the air flow should remove most of the heat. Most of the heat leaves the exhaust out the tailpipe anyhow.

It's an insulator for road noise, you're going to feel like you're driving in a tin can when you take it out.

Damn, I replied to this but the post isn't showing up.

You're talking about the undercoating on the bottom of the car? Like everyone said, it will deaden sound, but it does a LOT for rustproofing as well. If that was bare steel, in some parts of the country the car would barely last through a single winter.

The rubbery tar under the carpet is definately for road noise insulation. Without it, your car would SOUND like the inside of a drum.

If I didn't still have my sound tar, I would need to wear earplugs (almost already have to) with my open manifold exhaust that exits right under passenger floor.

The tar BELOW the car, if you have some, is weather related. If its solid, you should be ok.....but if it's all cracked up, and missing some pieces, and you want your car for longer than another year....you might want to rip it off, and have it prepared and redone. Otherwise, its just a nice place for the water and salt to collect and eat your floor out.
