If we're thinking of the same hole, I believe mine has a rubber plug in it. Don't know if having nothing there will bother much?

I suppose it would be better to plug the hole, but I do not think that it would be detrimental not to. Depending on the driving condition where you are. Salt sand and mud are bad for clutches and stuff......

When mazda first released th rx-7, they made allowances for a super-duty flywheel damper, that was intended to keep flywheel vibrations down when the engine hit the expected 10,000+ rpms of the rotary... but when they realized that wasn't realistic, they plugged it with a rubber thingy...

no... it's just a drain grommet, or a "frost-expansion" plug... nothing to worry about really... you get more dirt and crud in there through the top, where the little metal plates are, that never seem to quite block off the holes...

I thought that hole was put there so one could tell if he had bad flywheel teeth and track down oil leaks. ...Since these cars tend to leak oil in strange places(rolling eyes). I had the rear main seal go one time, but I thought it was the oil pan gasket because it was dripping mainly by the oil pan. But it was a headache to take the tranny/flywheel off to replace the seal.
