how do i check the timing?
how do i check the timing?
my car has a studder sometimes in third at high rpms, it does it in 4th too sometimes, so i want to check the timing to make sure its on. otherwise i think that im giong to replace the fuel pump.
Turn the car on, let it warm up to idle speed. Get a timing light, hook the light to the lower left spark plug wire (facing spark plugs). Loosen the bolt (10mm) below the distributor that holds it in place. Aim the light at the large engine pulley. Slowly turn the distributor cap until the first little line on the pulley lines up with the timing mark above the pulley. Tighten bolt. Move timing light lead to the top left spark plug wire (facing spark plugs). You'll see two phillips head screws holding down a metal object on the right side of the distributor. Loosen them and you'll be able to slide it toward and away from the distributor slightly. Aim the timing light at the pulley again and slide it until your 2nd pulley mark lines up with the mark above the pulley. Tighen the screws. Done.
