the ecu controls most of all the emissions in our cars.

The Emissions Control Unit does just that, controlls emissions. But I haven't removed mine because I don't know if it will affect anything that I care about. Doesn't look like it by the wiring diagram in the heynes though.

Basically besides the solenoids, it controls the choke and connects to the cruise control. So if you have no emissions, no cruise or AC, and a manual choke or no choke, you can ditch it completely.

I think this is correct...I've always thought it was an Electronic Control Unit.

as far as i can tell there are at least 3 wires that go down to it i think i need.
oil pressue, water temp, a wire with connector that plugs into the back of the alt. and a black one that might loop back to the starter.
i would like to ditch it if possible.

I don't think the oil pressure and water temp run there at all. The one that goes to the start terminal of the ignition switch is to engage the fuel pump when cranking. You can bypass the fuel pump relay, and then you won't need that. You can always check how it would effect things by just unplugging the ECU.

Dang....

Where's that emoticon with the dunce cap.

Electronic Control Unit it is. Sorry guys

Shows what you get when you assume that since it controls the rat's nest solonoids it must be "emissions"

The oil level, oil pressure, and water temp should all go from their sender directly to the gauge cluster. Your best bet is probably take the wiring diagram and start tracing wires and figuring out what you need and what you don't. You will have to bypass the fuel pump relay if you have an 84/85 car, but other than that you don't really need the ECU at all.
