3.5:1 Ford Motorsport here. Anything between 3.5:1 and 3.8:1 should be fine on a turbo engine, you might want a slightly higher ratio for non-turbo.

Don't forget to figure in tire size and diameter.

245/50/15 on the back of the widebody, with the GSL gears, 3.90, made a 10% difference in my speedo over the stock tire/wheel combo. I need a 4.44 set to bring it back close to being accurate.

You need to look at your turbo, when it will hit full boost, what you want for top end, where you want the 'sweet spot' in the torque/hp curve and which port you are using. I myself, would go 3.90-4.10 for a street port and 4.44 for a bridgeport, with full boost coming in by 3500-4k. Ford gear sets are so cheap compared to the Mazda ones, you can buy 3 of them and play, where you would be stuck with one choice from Mazda.

I'm thinking on 4:10 gears. I have a ported TII engine with the GT35R T04 1.0 A/R.. full boost at around 3200 rpm..

Well, the TIIs run 16" rims and the same ratio gear set as the SE, within less than 1/2% anyway. So if you are running a TII tranny, you should be fine. Speedo may be a little off, depending on tire size.

if you want 4.10's then just get them out of a stock explorer at the junk yard!

I'd do 3.73's. With the stock -se rear and a 88 T2 trans it revs too high on the freeway at 70mph. 1st gear is pretty worthless also because of the 4.07's in the -se rear.

Ok.. so when i driving on the freeway at 80 mph my tach shows 3600-3700 rpm. i have a S5 TII trans with 17" 215/45/17 tires.. is the speedo correct? I wiould like to keep it near this rpm range on the freeway.. If i go to 3:90's will my tach be higher or lower?

Yep. That's what I have - and I love it. 3rd gear/redlines at 110 mph.
It creates enough load on the engine and turbo that it increases spooling.

I wouldn't recommend it for tooo big a turbo though.

I have a GT35R T04 1.0 A/R.. So the 3:73's would be the best for me? Thanks for all the info..

A GT35/40 is verrry similar to mine. If you have a good tune, you will like it. Highway cruising is much improved too.

gearing spreadsheet

Gonzz:
Shoot me a pm with your email addy and I will send you an excel spreadsheet for the 5 speed gearing. You can then insert the rear gear, tire size, and ratios for first thru fifth for whatever combination you would like to try.
If you know of some way to make the spreadsheet available for download by members let me know.
