Question What fuel pump?

I am in need of a new fuel pump for my 85 GS, and the treasure yard that I go to has a bunch of 1st and 2 nd gens. Will a 2nd gen fuel pump work on my car. The reason I am asking is that it would be newer so in theory it should last longer.

85 GS? That's 12A right? If it is then the 2nd gen pump won't work since it's an efi pump and puts out way too much pressure for a carb. Get a Carter or Holley. It's a good idea to upgrade the fuel pump even on a relatively stock motor if you drive it for long periods at full throttle.

You'll want to get a regulator as well, if you get a high performance pump like the Carter 7psi one.

The effect of upgrading the fuel pump is actually pretty impressive.

I've had a Holley Blue for about 2 years with no problem.

Get a Carter fuel pump from Summit or Jeg's, it's the street/strip model. Mount it right in front of the axle on the frame rail, use rubber mounting of some sort (it's still going to be incredibly loud), put a Holley regulator in the engine compartment, set the pressure to 2.5 lbs using a gauge from Paul Yaw. Put a filter between the tank and the pump. You are now good to go.

2.5 psi? my haynes manual says 3-4 psi. I am looking into a new pump and regulator too. Is 2.5 where you should set it?

I'd stick with what the manual says. I think Yaw recommends 2.5psi for HIS carbs.

Do you have power to the pump, check the wires. Revhed is right, you probably should use the Haynes pressure setting. I have a Yaw carb, and mine is set to 2.5 lbs. Of course unless you use Paul's pressure gauge, you will probably be off by quite a bit anyway.
