looks like a type of water temperature sensor. mine is trimmed too...but thanks for reminding me about it (mounts a mechanical water temp gauge in its place)

that is not the teperature sensor, the temperature sensor is a pelet looking thing on the drivers side of the engine near the oil filter pedistal

The sensor on the thermostat housing is only for the choke. The sensor for the guage is located near the oil filter.

That's the way the car in my avatar came.

You dudes sure you aren't thinking of the oil pressure sender? That's the bulbous looking deal near/around/under the heater hose spout.

the temp sensor for the gauge is near the oil pressure sender, but yeah two different animals. Let me see if I can pull up a pic of it.

That is the sensor for your choke. Like before the real water temp is on the side of the motor.
