What does detonation sound like?
Out of curiousity, what does detonation sound like. I'm just trying to judge how much advance it can go before it does that. Just out of curiousity

a piston engine will make a ping noise, a rotary will make something a lot weirder, also keep in mind that you wont be able to hear it at high rpm and high throttle.
stock dizzy with the vacuum hooked up runs about 35 degrees cruising, and 20at wot. its in the fsm, so start there

Here in Australia with RHD RX7's it sounds like a bunch of CD cases rattling around in your glove compartment.
In the US with LHD versions I'd suggest it'd sound like some loose CD cases rattling around inside your dash

Alright thanks guys. I think that I've been experiencing it then. at first I though it was my new muffler rattling around on the body, but upon further investigation, it wasn't really coming from where I wanted.
This is running with a second gen CAS and MS.

My dads ford f-150 v8 sounds like marbles in the cat. He says its prob just a bad cat and i always thought that too. Since we have had this truck it ran fine and still does, but the check engine light will not go off. A dianosics test showed one of 4 o2 sensors bad. This o2 sensor was on the right side and the noise is from the left cat. But can a piston engine sound like this if detonated?

The $1 coin (which we've had since '89) is called... (are you ready?) ... the Loonie.
Simple, straightforward, has a loon on the front, hence the name. It's a gold coloured coin and yeah I'd bet that detonation sounds like about three grand worth of loonies falling from your pocket (or $1500 worth of twonies, the $2 coin)
