what do they sound like

I really dont know what a rotary engine is supposed to sound like, I havent heard one, mine has an exhaust leak cause it wont hook up, I was told it would sound alot like a lawnmower, with a leak. Mine sounds like a lawn mower that keeps goin through thick patchs of grass;....prrdrp.prrdrp..prrdrrdp...prrdrp.prrdrp; i really dont know how to put it into text, but i think my timing is off, could this be why ots doin that, or is this the way they sound. Im just worried there is sumthing wrong inside the engine.
thanks for any input

Hard to describe what it should sound like and hard to diagnose a problem based on just sound.. If it is hunting to die, you could have a fuel problem, an ignition problem, your A/F could be too lean, you could have a vaccume leak, or any number of other things... And with a stock exhaust they do sound more like a weed wacker than a law mower but with an aftermarket exhaust they have a very nice sound to them... So unless the car drives like a lawnmower then the engine is probably fine and there is just something else screwed up..

1. Do a tune up to the car. Spark plugs, wires, dizzy cap and rotor, air filter, oil change and filter, fuel filter.

2. Check your fuel flow rate and pressure at the carb.

3. Check for spark at the coils and at the spark plugs both leading and trailing.

4. Check your timing. Make sure the plug wires are going to the right places

5. Check for vacuum leaks, those hoses around the rat's nest soleniods should be well aged and cracking by now.

6. Check compression on your rotors.

7. Rebuild the carb.

Good luck!

I posted a while back some sounds for my engine at http://f2.pg.briefcase.yahoo.com/bc/...r=/rx7&.view=l

floorit.mp3 is the car iddling for a few seconds and then a pedal to the metal, startup.mp3 is the sound of the engine firing up with the car having gone thru warm up, and lawnmover.mp3 is how my car was sounding first thing in the morning when started, with foul plugs in one rotor. btw my engine also has an exhaust leak - pretty noise as you can hear in the floorit one.

Hope that can give you something to compare with.

That's what one sounds like with a huge leak at the manifold and gutted cats.

Sounds like backfiring, but I could be wrong. It was a bit fuzzy on my computer. If it is backfiring, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Good luck with it.

Yup sounds like mine after it is really warmed up after a hard run. Rev it good and ya get a little bit of muffled back fire (probably in the empty cat)

I also have a slight leak, probably at the joint between the manifold and the pipe to the empty cat but I don't think it is too bad. Exhaust is stock manifold to one empty cat (air tube blocked) to stock muffler.
